Alan Carr makes cheeky joke about 'beautiful' Kate Middleton to husband Prince William

Alan Carr made a cheeky joke to Prince William about Kate Middleton as the royal couple joined the comedian at the Royal Variety Performance.

Alan, who was hosting the event’s 94th incarnation, greeted the Duchess of Cambridge by telling her she looked “absolutely beautiful”.

The comedian has been married to his husband Paul Drayton since 2018 and was quick to clear up any misunderstanding with William.

He told the Duke of Cambridge: “Sir, I am sure you do not know who I am but I am not hitting on your wife.”

William and Kate were greeted by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant Colonel Jane Davis as they attended the event at the Royal Albert Hall.

Kate was dressed in a floor length green Jenny Packham dress, while William wore a classic tuxedo to the annual charity show.

Before the performance, a posy of flowers was presented to Kate by 10-year-old Poppy Clee and the show programme was given to William by Rowan Clarke, also 10.

The royal couple were introduced to the chairman of the Royal Variety Charity, Giles Cooper, and life-president Laurie Mansfield who hosted them in the royal box.

Mr Mansfield said after the event: “It it fabulous that it is back, doing entertainment for a full audience of 5,000 people. It is just remarkable in these times for the charity, it is a godsend.”

Last year, the Royal Variety Performance was held at the Blackpool Opera House in front of a virtual audience because of Covid.

Speaking to William, the treasurer of the Royal Variety Charity, Ian Freeman, explained: “It has been a tricky year for us.”

The Cambridges were entertained by a cast of famous faces at this year’s show which featured music from Years & Years, James Blunt, Elvis Costello, Gregory Porter and Anne-Marie.

The cast of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Matilda, who are celebrating 10 years in the West End, were on the setlist, as were the cast of Moulin Rouge.

There was also comedy from stars such as Judi Love, Bill Bailey and Josh Widdicombe.

This year’s show will be screened on ITV next month.
