Kay Burley admits she was an 'idiot' to break Covid rules for 60th birthday bash

Sky News presenter Kay Burley has admitted she was an “idiot” after she broke lockdown rules which led to a six-month work suspension.

Following a birthday party she had had last December for her 60th in London, Kay spent half a year of the air as a consequence to her actions.

During the event, London was in lockdown Tier 2 zone and the presenter had split her gathering with eight friends across two tables, as the restrictions meant that only six people were allowed at one table.

It was later in the evening that the broadcaster “inadvertently” broke lockdown rules by “briefly popping into another restaurant to spend a penny while waiting for a taxi home”.

It has been claimed that four people went on to Kay’s home to continue the celebrations, however the news anchor has neither confirmed or denied this happening.

She made her return to Sky earlier this month and when talking to the Daily Mail that she thought she was “Covid-compliant'”.

Kay said to the publication: “I thought I was Covid-compliant. I wasn’t. I made a mistake.

“I was an idiot and I let myself and my viewers down. I’m sorry for what I did and for any heartache, I caused the loyal friends with me at the time.

“I was appropriately sanctioned.”

The star also said that her viewers had been annoyed with her actions but that ultimately they were eager for her return to their screens.

She added: “I paid for my mistake; quite rightly. My viewers told me how frustrated they were with me and they were right to do so.

“With time, the mood music changed and my viewers wanted me back.”

The 60-year-old is now back in her role and reported on the G7 summit in Cornwall, of her return she said, “It’s great to be back.”
