Mel B set to receive MBE for bravery after providing victim support for domestic abuse

Mel B is to be awarded an MBE for her bravery and services to domestic abuse victims.

In the past, the 46-year-old has opened up about her own violent experiences in a bid to provide support to others who had faced similar situations.

Now a patron for Women’s Aid, Mel decided she needed to reach more women to let them know there was help out there.

Playing the role of a badly beaten victim of domestic violence in the emotional music video Love Should Not Hurt, she inspired many to seek support.

According to and insider Mel has always believed that the campaign had been the “most important thing she’d ever done”.

A source told The Sun: “It is well deserved. Despite her achievements in music and TV she believes her campaigning is the most important thing she’s ever done.

“Not only does she have first- hand experience of it but she has met many women who have suffered. She has a real fire in her belly about campaigning.

“She is so passionate about it and brings so much energy to everything she works on. She was incredibly brave to speak out as it is such a deeply personal thing for her.”

The singer stormed No. 10 in 2019, vowing to make it her own “mission” to win further support for victims – and has also worked on a number of campaigns to obtain more funding for shelters for women fleeing abusive relationships.

In her memoir Brutally Honest which was released in 2018, Mel provided readers with insight into her marriage with convicted domestic abuser Stephen Belafonte, 46.

Mel claimed in her book that film producer’s coercive behaviour began on their wedding night in 2007 and continued for years to come, until she had the strength to walk away.

Back in 2014, when Mel was a judge on the ITV show the X Factor, it was brought to light that the singer’s marriage wasn’t going so great.

The songstress was missing for one episode and Mel later revealed that she attempted to take her own life on the eve of the final.

Mel decided to put on a brave face and did make a remarkable return to the X Factor stage, this time showing everyone at home that she was wedding ring free.

The next year the hitmaker and Belafonte – who share ten-year-old daughter Madison – entered into divorce proceedings.

As part of their settlement agreement all abuse charges were dropped.
