Queen reportedly sought 'help' to deal with stress of her 'annus horribilis'

The Queen allegedly “had somebody in to help her with breathing and relaxing” during the pressure of her “annus horribilis”.

This was reportedly during the tougher year of 1992 for her Majesty following the release of the Princess Diana tell-all-book Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words and Prince Andrew’s divorce from Sarah Ferguson.

The 94-year-old admitted in her speech of that year that the Royal Family had suffered during her Guildhall speech to mark the 40th anniversary of her Accession.

She said at the time it was not a year she would look back on with “undiluted pleasure” following the stress she was under during that time of her reign.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton has since claimed that the Queen had brought in a professional to help the monarch with “breathing and relaxing” exercises.

On ITV this morning on Lorraine, Morton also alleged that Princess Margaret sought counselling.

He said: “Princess Margaret did go for psychological counselling and even the Queen herself during her annus horribilis had somebody in to help her with breathing and relaxing.

“In a funny kind of way, the Royal Family have a history of going for help from professional bodies for psychological help.”

Since the speech in 1992, royal experts have said they believe it was the Queen’s quick and dry wit which got the family through it.

Speaking on the Channel 5 documentary, The Queen: In Her Own Words, former British ambassador Charles Crawford said: “In a speech during lunch there has to be some humour.

“The people drafting have taken a lot of care and I think the Queen herself will have taken a lot of care to get the tone of it just right.

“She will know perfectly well when reading the papers and they know it’s a terrible year so, why not say it?”

Expert Camilla Tominey also claimed: “The Queen has got quite a dry sense of humour so, I think by choosing a Latin phrase it’s a little bit tongue in cheek.

“This idea what she would characterise one of the most disastrous years in her reign as annus horribilis.

“Of course everyone there knew what she meant.

“I think it also has the great advantage of being a very ground soundbite.”

It comes after her Majesty is understood to be “pleased” after being inundated with letters of encouragement in response to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey which included accusations against the Royal Family during the two-hour TV special earlier this month.

The couple claimed an unnamed royal was “concerned” about the potential colour of – then unborn – son Archie’s skin due to Meghan’s mixed race heritage.

Since the interview premiered in the US on March 7 – and the UK the following night – well-wishers have also flooded Windsor Castle with cards and gifts in a sensation show of solidarity, the Express reports.
