Charmed and Soap star Rebecca Balding dies aged 73 after private cancer battle

Rebecca Balding has died at the age of 73 after a private battle with ovarian cancer.

The American TV star was best known for playing Carol David in the sitcom Soap as well her role as Elise Rothman in the original Charmed.

She starred as Alyssa Milano’s character Phoebe Halliwell’s boss in the series, which aired from 1998 until 2006.

Her additional TV credits include Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Starsky & Hutch, 7th Heaven, I’m A Big Girl Now, Hotel, The New Wave, Cagney & Lacey and The Bionic Woman.

Rebecca also featured in 80s cult classic movies Silent Scream and The Boogens.

Her most recent film appearance was in 2005’s Yesterday’s Dreams.

Rebecca’s husband, actor-director James L. Conway, confirmed the news of her passing to Deadline and confirmed that she died in Utah on Monday July 18.

Rebecca’s cousin, Caroline Williams, also took to social media to announce her death.

She penned: “My cousin, Rebecca Balding, has passed away in Salt Lake City. While we were not close in adulthood, she was a profound influence on my curiosity about show business and acting. #TheBoogens was where she met her delightful husband @jameslconway. Mother, wife, actress. Did it all.”

Tributes came pouring in for the star, with thousands devastated by the news of her death.

“RIP Rebecca Balding, an actress I have loved for as long as I can remember. This is Rebecca with Bruce Davidson in the Insight episode Checkmate. She was fantastic,” a heartbroken user penned.

Another tweeted: “Not Aunt Jackie/Elise!! Lord this hurt my heart to hear about. RIP Rebecca Balding,” which was followed by a broken heart.

“I loved her performance in Silent Scream with Barbara Steele and Yvonne De Carlo as well. I am sorry to hear this news,” wrote a third.

The actress met her director husband James when she auditioned for a role in the horror film The Boogens and the pair got married in February 1981.

Rebecca is survived by her husband as well as her daughters Sarah and Kathleen, and her grandchildren.
