They went on to admit that the film is in “early stages” and there is “still no director attached to the project”.

Disney are calling the next instalment in the franchise A Day At The Sea and the test shoot will get the production ball rolling.

The source continued: “A call sheet has been distributed among those in the know. Bruce Hendricks, who worked on the first three films, is named as the Executive Producer on the new project.”

The hugely successful film series grossed over £3.4billion worldwide and reportedly made Depp a lot of cash – as much as £200million or more.

However, his role in the series hung in the balance after recent legal issues.

Depp lost his libel trial against The Sun in November 2020 after he was branded as a “wife beater” in an article about him and his former wife Amber Heard.

Amber then went on to sue Johnny for defamation and won back in June 2022.

During the widely publicised trial, Amber’s legal team asked Johnny if he would ever return to the franchise and his answer may be puzzling to some, considering the recent announcement.

They asked the actor if Disney “came to him with $300 million and a million alpacas,” would he still refuse to work with them on another Pirates of the Caribbean film – to which he answered “that is true”.
