X Factor's Joe McElderry unrecognisable as he poses topless 14 years after winning show

Joe McElderry shot to fame back in 2009 during the sixth series of The X Factor, but looks worlds away from the fresh-face teenager that stepped on stage in front of the judges.

At the age of 18, Joe sailed through the competition under the guidance of fellow Geordie Cheryl, piping Stacey Solomon and Olly Murs to the X Factor crown.

Joe’s debut single was a cover of Miley Cyrus track The Climb and soared to number one in the UK charts immediately after his huge win.

The Newcastle-born star has been keeping his Instagram followers updated on his travels as he enjoys a lavish holiday in Barbados.

One of Joe’s latest Instagram snaps shows him posing topless in a pair of black shorts as he soaked up the sun on the beach.

While in another, the former ITV star can be seen relaxing in a hot tub while sipping on rum punch, with stunning scenery of palm trees and the sea visible behind him.

He joked he had been in the sun a little too long as he penned: “Yes I am sunburnt! I never learn! But the Rum Punch is helping”.

The star has been praised for his body transformations in the past – after being fat shamed following an appearance on Lorraine in 2015, where he reportedly showed off a “fuller frame”.

He discussed the impact cruel comments could have on younger generations, telling the Mirror at the time: “It was a bad angled photo and I would go as far to say it was an edited photo as well, but that’s a whole other story.

“I reacted to it in a funny way by posting a topless picture from the gym and made a joke out of it, but I also wanted to send out a message to kids and teenagers that of course your body changes when you get older, of course you change shape, of course your shoulders get broader, of course your arms are bigger.”

Two years later, he appeared in a UK musical tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and took to the stage wearing nothing but a loincloth.
