BBC Breakfast delivered a breaking news alert just moments into the programme. Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty kicked off Saturday’s (July 25) show by providing an urgent update regarding two European cities, disclosing that Bordeaux and Madrid face danger from “raging wildfires”.
Residents in Bordeaux’s suburbs have been ordered to evacuate their properties as the inferno starts to advance towards the city in the country’s south west.
Naga reported that over 200,000 people have already evacuated. Meanwhile, officials in Madrid have admitted they “don’t have the capacity” to control the wildfire that’s spreading close to the capital. A breaking BBC News ticker subsequently flashed across the screen, confirming that emergency crews had worked through the night fighting the wildfires in both cities.
Charlie passed over to World News correspondent Joe Inwood, who verified that Spain has declared the wildfires a “national emergency”, reports the Express.
He told viewers in a voiceover: “Spain says these fires are impossible to control, but still, they try.” Shots from the devastating wildfires aired on screen, showing firefighters trying to contain the blaze.
One of the areas worst affected by the wildfires is Cebreros, where drought, soaring temperatures and climate change have combined to leave large parts of the town devastated.
Speaking to the BBC, local resident Janet admitted she had been left feeling “nervous”, saying she had never experienced anything like the disaster before.
World News correspondent Joe Inwood added: “Spain has declared the fires a national emergency for the first time. A man has been arrested, suspected of starting one using farm machinery.
“The government has requested EU help and are getting four specialist water-bombing planes.”
