Celebrating 25 years together, boyband veterans are in talks to turn their life story into a film documentary. The quartet, back with new album Reflections reckon the highs and lows of their career need to be told although these days they are clean living. Duncan James said: “Rather than thinking, ‘oh let’s go out and find a club or a party to go to’ I’m in bed.”
BOYBAND legends Blue will relive the highs and lows of their colourful pop career in a new film documentary.
Celebrating their 25th anniversary this week the lads have released ace new album, Reflections which they previewed on Strictly Come Dancing recently. The quartet have also been discussing turning the Blue story into a film or TV project.
Blue’s Duncan James said: “There’s talks about doing some stuff and I think it would be a very interesting documentary. We were never your clean cut kind of Westlife type boys. We always had a bit of an edge to us and I think our story is quite interesting how we met, how we got together, and all the highs and the lows that we’ve been through in our career is very colourful.
“So I think it would be quite a great thing to do, as of now, we’re not filming anything, but there is obviously always talk about doing something, and I think if the right offer came along and the right network or whatever wanted to do something, then we would be interested.”
There’s been a lot of focus on pop acts in documentaries of late and Blue’s story needs telling says Duncan: “We did that Boy Band forever documentary, which was really great, I just watched The Boyzone one recently as well, which I thought was fantastic.”
The Blue story would be fascinating as despite selling millions of records and winning BRIT Awards, they faced personal struggles, including bankruptcy, health issues and public controversies along the way.
These days the foursome are way more sensible and more pipes and slippers while in the middle of a huge world tour.
“These last six months up to now feels like 25 years ago that’s how busy it’s been,” explained Duncan. “Like we’ve just got back from touring all over Asia, then we did a tour around India. I’m now non- non-stop working till August but obviously I’m not a 20 year old anymore. So my body’s like, ‘oh, I’m not used to this work’.
“I’m 47 and I look back now and think, ‘God, how did I do it? And how did I do it back then and party at the same time? Because honestly, I have to finish the gig and go straight to bed and get my sleep, because otherwise I’m so cranky the next day and I laugh because I think, God, we used to finish the gig, get on the flights, do all the work, and then go out and drink and party and then get back up the next day.
“We’re all dads now. So, I mean, look, we’ve all grown up and we’re more into trying to preserve our voices nowadays than trying to wreck them. Back in the day, it was like, oh, we didn’t give a f**k, but nowadays, we really do give a f**k and we really do care about our vocals and getting our sleep, different priorities, isn’t it? “I start counting how many hours I’m going to get sleep wise. So rather than thinking, ‘oh let’s go out and find a club or a party to go to’ I’m in bed.”
Blue’s super power always was their vocal prowess and being on the road has made them even stronger.
Duncan explained: “Over the last year we’ve all really started to work on our vocals as a band, to solidify that Blue sound. We’ve been gigging so much and I think the more you work together, the tighter you get. I don’t think there’s a lot of bands out there that sing like we do with all the different tones to our voices. And when we put them together it’s just a magical moment.”
Lyrically Reflections also delves into their personal histories, which has never been plain sailing. “We wanted to have a little nod lyrically to our journey, songs that are a little more about ourselves,” Duncan smiled. “We are really proud that we’re still around after 25 years. We’ve had a lot of highs and we’ve also had a lot of lows, but one thing that has stayed is the fact that we’ve always stayed with each other. We always supported each other, no matter what’s happened. And we’ve never had a member leave or ever swapped a member out. And I think we’re very proud of that fact.”
Catch Blue on a signing tour of record stores throughout this week and a headline tour in April.
