Britain’s Got Talent star Vinnie McKee was placed into an induced coma after a nosebleed turned into a life-threatening medical emergency.
The singer reached the final of Britain’s Got Talent last year after winning Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer with his rendition of The Proclaimers’ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). He took to social media on Friday (July 24) alongside photos of himself in intensive care.
The star posted photos of himself hooked up to medical equipment – including an oxygen tank – in hospital alongside his family. Vinnie explained that the ordeal began after performing his headline show in London on Sunday.
He wrote: “I don’t have much energy right now and I’m currently in intensive care, but I wanted to update you all as I’ve been quiet the past few days.”
The singer said he suffered a serious nosebleed after his show in London, which worsened the following day. Although he was initially treated and discharged from hospital, the bleeding returned while he was travelling back to Scotland.
Vinnie was later taken to Warrington Hospital, where doctors discovered he had suffered a damaged artery. After spending more than 24 hours in AandE and losing a significant amount of blood, the singer underwent emergency surgery.
He said: “After more than 24 hours in AandE and significant blood loss, I was taken into surgery. During the operation, I aspirated blood and became critically ill, leading to me being placed in an induced coma in intensive care.”
Vinnie has since regained consciousness and is now on the road to recovery. He told fans: “Thankfully, I woke up yesterday. I’m still very weak, but I’m in good hands and hoping to recover fully soon. Being able to hug my family again means everything.”
Vinnie has thanked the medical staff who cared for him during the terrifying ordeal. He added: “I can’t thank the incredible staff at Warrington Hospital enough for saving my life, and I’m so grateful for all your messages and support. Love you all. Vinnie.”
Fans rushed to the comments with messages of support, wishing the Glasgow performer a speedy recovery. One comment read: “So sorry to hear this Vinnie! Sounds awful. Sending you big hugs and lots of love and a speedy recovery! Xxxx.” While another stated: “Take care mate, hope you’re on the road to recovery!”
Love Island star Paige Turley said: “Omg this must have been terrifying for you all. Sending lots of love and a speedy recovery Vinnie.”
