After fronting Queen Adam Lambert is focused on showing the real him on his self titled new LP and reveals plans to create his dream theatrical role
After years of fronting Queen, Adam Lambert is focusing on a crazy little thing called himself.
The US star – armed with a six octave vocal range – returns with new LP, ADAM inspired by the 90s alternative and electronica sene. Despite it being self titled it’s actually the American Idol star’s sixth solo offering.
He explained why: “I like was toying with some titles and I was like, well, I don’t know how to sum this one up. It’s just me. I kind of realised that the theme is sort of like self-acceptance.
“It’s like looking in the mirror and going, ‘okay, these are the things about myself that are good, and then this is the stuff that’s not so good’.
“And kind of owning it as opposed to being in denial or running from it. And there’s a lot of confessional type songs on this album that are not necessarily like painting myself in like the angelic, ‘I’m perfect’, you know, ideal light. There’s some admissions of habits and you know, bad choices.”
It’s also the first album that he’s released independently which has afforded him greater creative freedom: “There’s no creative compromises. There’s no politics that you’re jumping around in. The difference of a major label is that they’re the bank and that they’re funding it. But when they’re funding it, they have a lot of opinions.
“And I’ve worked with some great people, but I’ve also worked with some people that had no clue. So it just felt like, you know what, let’s just do this this way. I got to hire an A&R that helped me put the thing together.
“I’m playing boss and it feels good.”
Fans loved his stint with Queen and it was a learning curve fronting such a huge band with so much history, while also honouring the late Freddie Mercury.
“I feel like I’m still me when I do it,” he said of joining the Bohemian Rhapsody stars. “I think I try to sort of honour the spirit of it, you know what I mean? Without imitating Freddie, I try to kind of think about the intention.
“It’s a very actor-y way of doing it. But what’s the intention of this song or of this lyric or whatever? And I try to bring the same sort of humour or gravitas that Freddie brought to it, the best I can.”
Speaking of theatre Adam has been treading the boards a lot in recent years starring in everything from Cabaret to Jesus Christ Superstar.
Now he’s decided to come up with his own stage production after he asked himself: “What show can we revive? And I was like, I don’t know if it’s written yet. Maybe we got to come up with something new.
“And I’m actually writing a musical.”
He’s keeping the theme a secret for now but teased: “I’ve been working on it since the pandemic. So it’s like I wrote a ton of music on Zooms with other writers.
“I can’t give it all away, but it’s an autobiographical, not autobiographical, it’s a biographical musical about somebody that lived in the 70s. A musician whose story I love, but he’s sort of obscure. A lot of people don’t know who he is.
“So it’s like a, it’s a really, I think it has some potential. I really like it. I might be in it. I don’t know if I would play the lead. I might play the villain.”
Adam is also playing a headline show on July 21 at The Roundhouse in London.
