Country music legend Dolly Parton’s final song is yet to be heard after the singer locked it away deep inside her theme park Dollywood, only to be released after her death
Dolly Parton was renowned for her mischievous ways and it appears that even in death, she’s still got a few surprises up her sleeve. During a 2022 chat with US comedian and talk show host Jimmy Fallon, Parton revealed that she’s got one final song stashed away safely at Dollywood and the unheard track is only to be unveiled after her death.
The tune, titled My Place in History, was written as her final offering and has never been heart by anyone except Dolly herself. The legendary American singer has now sadly died at the age of 80, but heartbroken fans won’t be finding comfort in her unreleased song anytime soon
Parton laid down the track in 2015 to mark the grand launch of her Dollywood DreamMore resort and the mystery song won’t surface until 2045, precisely 30 years after the resort first welcomed visitors, reports the Express.
Alongside the exclusive recording of her final song, Parton also tucked a CD player and cassette player into the time capsule which sits hidden somewhere within Dollywood.
While on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2022, she explained: “We do a lot of things at Dollywood, and one year we thought about it and they asked me if I’d write a song that no one would ever hear hear. I’d be dead, I’d be gone – or I might not be. Well, maybe not. I’ll be 99, you know me! I might still be hopping around! Anyway, I wrote a song and I put it in the box to be opened.”
She was already having second thoughts about sealing the song away, admitting to Clarkson that the track was a cracker and that she wished she could swap it for something else: “I don’t know whose damn idea that was,” Parton said of the secret track. “I figure [the song] probably disintegrate and nobody will ever hear it, that’s what bothers me. If it rots in there before they open it.”
In her 2020 autobiography titled Songteller: My Life in Lyrics, she revealed that securing the tune away felt like she was “burying one of my kids” or like “putting it on ice or something”. Dolly wrote: “I won’t be around to see it brought back to life,” adding that it was “burning me up inside that I have to leave it in there”.
A description next to the box, according to a fan photo, read: “This chestnut ‘Dream Box’ is a repository of Dolly’s memories and wishes for the future. It will not be opened until Dolly’s 100th birthday on January 19, 2046. The Dream Box itself is a tribute to her original mentor and uncle, Bill Owens, who has worked tirelessly to preserve the American Chestnut tree.”
“As a final tribute, Dolly has placed a song which she has written to be released as her last. Entitled, ‘My Place in History,’ only Dolly knows its melody and content until 2046.”
