Grammy-winning legend dies as tributes paid to beloved musical ‘inspiration’

A Grammy-winning musician has sadly died.

John Hammond has passed away age 83 and his friend Paul Smith, a Toronto Blues musician, took to Facebook on 1 March to share the news.

He wrote: “The blues world has lost a giant. I’ve lost my best friend. My heart goes out to Marla and the family. Rest easy, John.”

Smith said that John’s wife Marla informed him of the artist’s death.

Paul continued: “I’ve just been going through the photos we’ve shared over the years — from the Horseshoe Tavern to Albert’s Hall, from London to Montreal, to Edmonton to Ottawa — and each picture tells a story of great music, great people, and unforgettable nights.”

The musician was awarded a Grammy at the 52nd ceremony

“He was such an inspiration to me, I’ll miss him terribly…”

Hammond was given a Grammy Trustees Award for his credits co-producing a Bessie Smith reissue in 1971.

He was also known as John Paul Hammond, as he is the son of record producer John Henry Hammond, the legendary A+R man for Columbia Records.
