The UK heatwave has been giving Shaun Ryder flashbacks to a time when class A drugs were the only means of soothing his sunburn.
The Madchester legend who partied hard in the 1990s has been struggling with the high temperatures that have even turned his native Salford into a sweat pit. But things aren’t as bad as they were a few decades ago when he required a hospital stay – and some home remedies – to help recover from a little too much sun.
Shaun told the Daily Star: “I don’t really like it. I sweat, like a mother f***** because I’ve got no body hair whatsoever.
“I’m totally f****** alopecian up to the max. So there’s nowhere for the sweat to go except f****** roll off me head and I’ve got no eyebrows and I’ve got no eye lashes that makes it f******* aggravating in the sun.
“I just won’t go out in it, you know, when I’m working it’s usually late.”
In fact the Happy Mondays star is literally scarred by the sun following an unfortunate incident in the 1990s which left him in hospital.
“Years ago when we were in Valencia, in Spain, we’d just done a TV show about 5 o’clock in the morning playing live,” recalled Shaun, no longer on substances.
“We get out of the studio, something like 9 in the morning, fall asleep on the beach, and I wake up in the evening with third degree f****** burns. I had to go hospital.
“Good job I was taking heroin at the time. It made the pain not as bad. I got out of hospital and then we had to go and do another show.”
Shaun is hitting the road later this year for a new a spoken word tour where fans will be able to hear more of these improbable truths and his carnival of excess straight from the horse’s mouth.
