Actor Samuel Monroe Jr has died at the age of just 52 after a battle with severe meningitis and MRSA pneumonia.
The star is best known for his role in the 1993 crime drama film Menace II Society, which starred Samuel L. Jackson, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tyrin Turner. He also appeared in the movies Tales from the Hood (1995), Set It Off (1996) and The Players Club (1998).
The US actor had been on life support in the months prior to his passing. His mother Joyce Patton announced his death on Thursday (August 27) in a post on Facebook. She wrote: “I want to thank all of my Facebook family and friends new and old for praying for Samuel Monroe, Jr., my son.
“But today God called him home. Please honor my final request to pray for the family, especially his 3 children.”
The actor’s wife Shawna Stewart also shared her heartbreak over the loss. She wrote: “There are no words that can truly express the depth of my heartbreak or the emptiness I feel without you.
“Samuel, you were so much more than the talented actor, rapper the world knew and loved. You brought laughter, strength, kindness, and love into the lives of so many people.”
According to TMZ, Patton had filed for court-directed conservatorship to allow her to make the final decisions about her son’s life.
In April, Stewart revealed that her husband was on life support after contracting meningitis when in Las Vegas for work. She told Fox News Digital: “He went to several different hospitals, where his condition was repeatedly misdiagnosed and because of this negligence, the meningitis went untreated for eight months.”
Three months later, she said that he’d undergone his third brain surgery, had “lost all ability to move any part of his body” and had been suffering seizures. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help his family cover the costs of his medical bills.
In addition to his film career, Monroe Jr had parts in TV shows such as NYPD Blue, Smart Guy, Southland and Adult Swim’s Black Jesus.
