Former Survival of the Fittest contestant James Middleton has been rushed to hospital and has told followers he’s “thankful to be alive” after the horror health scare
Survival of the Fittest star James Middleton has been rushed to hospital after collapsing near the finish line of half marathon – and he’s told fans he’s “thankful to be alive”.
The online fitness coach appeared on the ITV show in 2018 and now boasts over 700,000 followers on social media, where he coaches others on how to improve their fitness. James took to Instagramand revealed he collapsed near the finish line of his recent half marathon attempt and had to be rushed to hospital to undergo tests.
He posted from his hospital bed and said: “So, my half marathon didn’t quite go to plan as you can probably tell. I am hooked up [to a drip], I’m in hospital, I’ve been here for about eight hours and I’m having to stay the night.
“I collapsed about 50 or 100 yards – but I’m not sure, I don’t remember anything. It was near the finish line, I had exhaustion, I had a temperature of 107.”
In the caption, he explained how he suffered memory loss after the collapse. He added: “I had a temperature of 107 so was in an ice bath for 20 mins to cool down which I don’t remember either.
“Then taken to hospital as I’ve got rhabdo (when muscle tissue breaks down so aggressively it releases proteins into the blood stream which can overwhelm the kidneys) but I am in great hands with the medical team here who are honestly incredible and I’m incredibly grateful for.
“Thankful to be alive, and I think for the foreseeable I’ll take a break from racing and get stuck into some yoga.”
James also joked that next time he wouldn’t “almost die trying to get a PR”. He added: “Lesson 1: the mind can overcome physical pain until the body shuts down. That’s probably when you’ve taken it too far. Lesson 2: don’t almost die trying to get a PR.
James has now moved from the UK and lives with his wife in Nashville. Announcing the arrival of their baby last year, he wrote: “The best club in the world. I guess we never know the love of a parent until we become one ourselves.
“My life now has a whole new meaning and purpose: protecting and loving this little girl forever. My wife the unsung hero behind it all. Grateful beyond belief.”
