Angela Scanlon and Judi Love star in a new short film celebrating female empowerment and women supporting women.

Angela Scanlon and Judi Love shine the light on the Sisterhood Code – a celebration of the subtle, instinctive, and often hilarious ways women support each other every day.

A poll of 2,000 women revealed the ‘sisterhood code’ – which can involve giving a look to someone who needs rescuing from a conversation and doing a daily ‘are you okay?’ check in – is often about understanding what another woman needs or is feeling without her having to say it out loud.

The top 20 indicators that reveal you’re part of the ‘sisterhood’ include adjusting someone’s clothing label, alerting them to a wardrobe mishap – and refusing to sleep until you’ve confirmed all your mates have reached home safely, new research reveals.

Other key signs of the ‘code’ include telling someone if there is no loo roll in the cubicle (41%), or fixing a bra strap discreetly (37%). While sharing everything from tissues, plasters, safety pins, phone chargers and hair ties are also fundamental parts of being in the ‘sisterhood’.

The study was commissioned by Maltesers, which has partnered with Angela Scanlon and Judi Love to showcase the Sisterhood Code through a short film where the pair discuss their perspectives on these unspoken moments women immediately understand – and their significance.

The research found 37% of women have a mutually unspoken form of communication with their gal pals, and 68% can communicate or carry a conversation with them using only eye contact.

A third believe the ‘sisterhood code’ is very important in everyday life as 44% associate it with support and 23% with loyalty. And according to the poll, the average woman will also do something that represents the ‘sisterhood code’ three times a week.

A spokesperson from Maltesers said: “These moments might be subtle, but they speak volumes.”

The places women are most likely to use this covert form of communication include in a bar or nightclub (36%), public toilets (26%), and in the workplace (22%).

And when experiencing the ‘sisterhood code’, 77% of those polled, via OnePoll.com, said it improves their day.

he spokesperson from Maltesers added: “Whether it’s a glance, a gesture or a quiet step-in, the sisterhood code is a shared language that shows up in everyday life, reminding women that they’re rarely facing things alone.

“It reflects an unspoken understanding as well as a powerful mix of emotional intelligence, intuition and mutual support that plays out daily, often without anyone even realising.”
