Saturday Kitchen’s Matt Tebbutt and Strictly’s Shirley Ballas had viewers talking after their playful exchange led to an awkward on-air moment
Saturday Kitchen presenter Matt Tebbutt found himself having to “move on” after the programme spiralled into mayhem following a cheeky on-air moment.
The much-loved BBC cookery programme made its return this morning (January 10) with a brand new live episode. Host Matt was accompanied in the studio by chefs Adam Smith and Mandy Yin, alongside special guest Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas.
Olly Smith was on hand to recommend wine matches for the dishes being prepared, whilst Strictly professional Vito Coppola showcased some of his culinary skills.
However, events took an unexpected turn when Shirley and Matt engaged in some playful banter, with the TV chef disclosing that producers told him to “move on” with the show, reports the Express.
Matt whipped up a beloved brunch favourite, consisting of potato and onion fritters accompanied by feta cheese, crowned with salmon and poached eggs, reports the Mirror.
When he presented the dish to Shirley, he fumbled his words, enquiring: “I made this. There we’ve got pouched eggs and we’ve got those… what are they called?”
The studio burst into giggles as Shirley playfully ribbed him: “Am I making you lose your concentration here.”
Matt swiftly replied: “Yes you are.”
He continued describing his creation: “What else, there is a bit of sour cream, a bit of salmon. I think that is it.”
Shirley seemed thrilled, observing: “I mean, it is like a full course meal isn’t it?” After tasting a forkful, she admitted: “umm. I like that, I like your cooking. I’ve always liked your cooking.”
In a cheeky exchange, Matt told the star: “Good. I like your dancing” The studio erupted with laughter as Shirley shot back: “You wouldn’t be chatting me up are you?”.

Keeping the playful banter going, Matt joked: “Um it’s getting steamy in here. Let’s hang around here for a moment.”
Amidst the laughter, the show’s producers were keen to keep things on track, leading Matt to announce: “I’m being told to move on.”
This humorous interaction took place just hours before an unexpected shift in the show’s schedule was revealed by Matt. The programme, which typically starts at 10am, began 15 minutes earlier at 9:45am.
The 51 year old presenter shared this update across his social media channels. On Instagram, he posted a snap of himself and co-host Olly Smith, both sporting wide grins while tucking into a meal together.
The photo was overlaid with the message: “Back to school tomorrow…earlier time 9:45am… Be there!” His caption read: “@Saturdaykitchen See you at 9:45am!”
