Scott Mills’ self-confessed biggest fan says she’s become a recluse “just like him”, spending most of her days surrounded by a shrine dedicated to the BBC presenter after retreating from public life.
Yolande May, 56, from Norfolk, previously hit the headlines after revealing she had spent more than £5,000 transforming her home into the ultimate Scott Mills tribute, filling every room with posters, cardboard cut-outs, personalised gifts and memorabilia celebrating the radio star.
She says her support for Scott has remained unchanged despite the difficult period he faced following a police investigation into historical allegations. In 2016, the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation into claims of alleged sexual offences involving a boy under the age of 16, said to have taken place between 1997 and 2000.
Scott denied the allegations, and in 2019 the Crown Prosecution Service concluded there was insufficient evidence to bring charges. The investigation was subsequently closed without any prosecution. However, since the news broke he has lost his BBC Radio 1 job and received fan backlash. Yolande previously told Daily Star: “I’ll always support Scott. I just want him to be happy.”
Now, Yolande says the attention her story received has changed her life – and not always for the better. Speaking to Daily Star, she admitted: “It’s been a sore and disheartening few months since we last spoke.
“I have a lot of public attention on me now regarding Scott Mills here in Norfolk. People call me over and chat to me. Some comments are nice and some can be cruel and hateful.”
The experience has left her withdrawing from the outside world, saying she now spends most of her time at home in what she affectionately calls her “Scott Mills cave”.
“I don’t go out much now like I used to,” she explained. “I’m like Scott. I just want to be home in my Scott Mills cave, where I’ve still got everything hanging up, or in my summer house where Scott is as well.”
Despite the difficult few months, Yolande has been working on a new tribute to the broadcaster. She has now completed a giant handmade banner bearing Scott’s famous catchphrase, “Love You Bye”, alongside his name.
“I’ve finally finished my Scott Mills banner saying ‘Love You Bye’ and Scott Mills on it. It’s massive,” she said. “I really want Scott himself to have this and I want to meet him and hand it to him face to face.”
Yolande hopes the banner will finally help her fulfil a long-held dream of meeting the presenter she has admired for years.
“Life is so hateful and cruel most of the time,” she admitted. “So please get in touch with me, Scott.”
The devoted fan has previously spoken about how Scott’s radio shows helped her through some of the toughest periods of her life, and says her admiration for him has never faded.
For now, she’s content spending her days in her “Scott cave” – but still hopes the presenter will one day knock on her door so she can personally hand over the banner she made especially for him.
