  • Artist of the Week: Cardi B

The ‘Bodak Yellow’ hitmaker is on track to make a high debut on Billboard Hot 100 as she breaks multiple records with her controversial single ‘WAP’ featuring Megan Thee Stallion.
    Aug 17, 2020
AceShowbiz – Cardi B did not shy away from controversy as she embraced her inner sex goddess with her music comeback this year. The female rapper teamed up with fellow femcee Megan Thee Stallion as they unapologetically owned their sexuality in a new collaboration called “WAP” known for “Wet Ass Pussy” or bowdlerized as “Wet and Gushy”.
The steamy single ruled both global Spotify and U.S. Spotify charts with 3.75 million streams internationally and 2.34 million domestically. It became the first female rap collaboration to do so and broke the record for the highest first-day streams for a female rap song and for an all-female collaboration in the United States.
The music video featuring all-star female cameos like Kylie Jenner, Normani, Rosalia, Mulatto, Rubi Rose, and Sukihana showed off women’s sex appeal front and center. It scored the most views within 24 hours for a female collaboration, garnering over 26.5 million views. It has since amassed over 98 million views and still counting.
On top of that, the song topped the U.S. iTunes and Apple Music charts. It additionally climbed up to No. 4 in the U.K. singles chart and reached No. 30 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. If those numbers are any indication, it’s expected to make a high entry on Billboard Hot 100 as well.
While the song gained steam, fans were divided. Many such as Christina Aguilera, Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Remy Ma, Azealia Banks, Halsey, and JoJo applauded Cardi B and her gang for their positive sex message, but more conservative ones like Cee-Lo Green and Russell Brand were not too impressed.
Both Cardi and Megan defended their provocative lyrics. “People think that WAP is so nasty and freaky except people from Florida …..Trina,Khia,Jackie O used to go in in,” Cardi tweeted. Meanwhile, Megan called the critics hypocrites, “Lol dudes will scream ‘slob on my knob’ word for word and crying abt WAP. bye lil bo.”

    Instagram

The ‘Love and Hip Hop: Miami’ cast member, who also has a fair share of rap songs with sexual lyrics, says in a new interview that ‘some people can’t really handle’ raunchy songs.
    Aug 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Trina has weighed in on the criticism that Cardi B and her collaborator Megan Thee Stallion faced regarding the raunchy lyrics on their new track “WAP”. In a new interview, the Miami rapper shares that she and her friends laugh as haters are being mad for no reason.
“I just feel like it’s a freedom of expression,” she explains to Complex. “I feel like I’m the main person to be like, ‘Yes,’ because I’m a sensual person. I came out in my career talking about being sensual and being expressive.”
The “Love & Hip Hop: Miami” cast member, who also has her fair share of rap songs with sexual lyrics, shares that “some people can’t really handle it, and that’s fine,” adding that “it’s not for everybody.” She sarcastically goes on saying, “If you’re one of those that can’t handle it, stay up under the rock. You do that. This is not the world for you. This is the world of extraordinary, and it’s women being free of fear and saying what they feel like saying.”
She later sends love to her fellow emcees. “Shout out to all the new female artists,” she exclaims. “I love to see it. There’s more women that we can celebrate that are beautiful. Hate it or love it, we’re here to stay.”
Prior to this, Cardi used Trina to defend “WAP”, which means “Wet A** P***y”, pointing out that she isn’t the only femcee with raunchy songs. “People think that WAP is so nasty and freaky except people from Florida …..Trina,Khia,Jackie O used to go in in,” Cardi wrote on Tuesday, August 11 on Twitter. The name-drop of Trina was enough to make the VH1 personality to trend on the app.
“Trina said ‘I’ll f**k him in the living room while his children home I make him eat it while my period on’ Wap is mid compared to that,” wrote one user, also defending “WAP”. Another fan added, “We literally grew up with Oochie Wally, My Neck my back, Trina, Whisper Song, Tip Drill, P***y Popping, Disco Inferno, the entire 2LiveCrew catalog but Wap is where the line is finally drawn.”
Someone else chimed in, “If y’all think WAP is the nastiest thing you heard, then stay away from Trina. ‘Look Back At Me’ makes WAP look innocent.”

  • Cardi B Spent $100,000 on Coronavirus Tests to Be Able to Shoot 'WAP' Music Video

    Instagram

The ‘Bodak Yellow’ hitmaker’s latest collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion is well on its way to becoming another huge hit for the pair, though fans and critics alike deem it ‘filthy’ and ‘nasty.’
    Aug 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Cardi B coughed up over $100,000 (£76,500) on coronavirus tests before shooting her controversial new “WAP” video with Megan Thee Stallion.
The rapper admits shooting the racy promo, which features cameos from Kylie Jenner, Normani Kordei and a host of snakes and big cats, was a costly affair, because everyone on set had to abide by strict health and safety guidelines.
And that meant Cardi had to pay for a series of measures before the cameras could roll.
“We had to spend $100,000 just on testing,” she explains. “Everybody on the shoot had to get tested for coronavirus.”
But at least she didn’t have to pay for the transportation and welfare of the big cats that appear in the promo, “We had a tiger and a leopard there, but we didn’t film with them in there because of safety and because of the pandemic. We spliced those scenes together.”
But she did agree to writhe around with snakes in one daring scene, adding, “I was naked and one of them peed all over me.”
“WAP” is now well on its way to becoming another huge hit for the rap pair, and the track’s success is being aided by all the controversy surrounding the provocative and explicit lyrics that focus on female sexual empowerment, with critics and fans alike calling the tune “filthy” and “nasty.”

  • Cardi B Hits Back at Carole Baskin, Calls 'WAP' Criticisms 'Ridiculous'

    WENN/Netflix

The ‘Bodak Yellow’ femcee has responded to the ‘Tiger King’ star after the latter criticizes the use of wild animals in the newly-released ‘WAP’ music video.
    Aug 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Cardi B is hitting back at Carole Baskin after the “Tiger King” star slammed her for using big cats in her new “WAP” video.
The rapper’s claws are out after Baskin took aim at her raunchy promo, in which Cardi appears alongside Megan Thee Stallion, accusing the reality star of murdering her missing husband.
“I’m not gonna engage with Carole Baskin on that,” Cardi told i-D. “Like, that’s just ridiculous, you know? Oh, Lord. Like, girl you killed your godd**n husband.”
In hit 2020 Netflix docu-series, Baskin’s rival Joe Exotic alleges she murdered her husband, Jack Lewis, who went missing in 1997. Baskin has denied any involvement in his disappearance.
The “WAP” promo features a menagerie of wild animals, including tigers and leopards, and while the big cats were filmed separately and digitally inserted into the video, Baskin, the CEO of Big Cat Rescue near Tampa, Florida, expressed her concerns about the use of the creatures in a statement.
“My guess is that most people won’t even see the photoshopped cats in the scenes because the rest of it is so lurid,” she said. “I was happy to see that it does appear to all be photoshopped. It didn’t look like the cats were really in the rooms with the singers.”
Despite the safety steps, however, Carole insisted the shooting process could still be damaging to the big cats, explaining, “You have to pose a wildcat in front of a green screen to get that image and that doesn’t happen in the wild. It can’t happen in sanctuaries like ours, where cats have plenty of room to avoid a green screen (or would shred it if offered access and could die from ingesting it).”

The star joined the platform in an effort to interact with her supporters and address rumours directly earlier this month, teasing she would use the site to offer exclusive footage.
“I’m doing a partnership with only fans,” she posted on Twitter. “Everytime some1 start a rumor I will be addressing it there (sic)… what else should I post besides rumors and behind the scenes? Maybe a video of me cleaning my home with my nails?”

Now, Cardi has taken to the subscription service, known for its often provocative content, to share unreleased footage from the making of “WAP”, which also features Megan Thee Stallion and a cameo from Kylie Jenner.

  • Cardi B Makes Trina Trending on Twitter While Defending 'WAP'

    Instagram

Cardi’s collaborator Megan The Stallion also defends the song, by noting the double standards that people have as she compares it to reactions to Tear Da Club Up Thugs’ 1999 song.
    Aug 12, 2020
AceShowbiz – Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s collaborative song “WAP” has sparked controversy for its raunchy lyrics as soon as it was released on August 7. Cardi has been defending the track on social media multiple times, and in a new Twitter post, she points out that she isn’t the only femcee with raunchy songs.
“People think that WAP is so nasty and freaky except people from Florida …..Trina,Khia,Jackie O used to go in in,” Cardi wrote on Tuesday, August 11 on the blue bird app. The name-drop of Trina was enough to make the “Love & Hip Hop: Miami” star to trend on the app.

Cardi B mentioned other rappers with raunchy songs.
Megan also joined Cardi in defending their song. Writing on her own page, the Hot Girl Summer said, “Lol dudes will scream ‘slob on my knob’ word for word and crying abt WAP. bye lil boy,” referring to Tear Da Club Up Thugs’ 1999 song.

Megan Thee Stallion called out the double standards against ‘WAP’.
On the track, the group raps, “Slob on my knob like corn on the cob/ Check in with me, and do your job/ Lay on the bed, and give me head/ Don’t have to ask, don’t have to beg/ Juicy is my name, sex is my game/ Let’s call the boys, let’s run a train/ Squeeze on my nuts, lick on my butt.”
“WAP” has received criticism from several people including James P. Bradley, a Republican running for a Congressional seat in California, who took issue with their provocative lyrics. Claiming that he “accidentally” heard the song, he tweeted, “Their new ‘song’ The #WAP (which i heard accidentally) made me want to pour holy water in my ears.”
“I feel sorry for future girls if this is their role model!” he said, adding, “Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion are what happens when children are raised without God and without a strong father figure.”
Former Republican Congressional candidate DeAnna Lorraine also slammed the song as “disgusting” and “vile,” and disagreed with the notion that the song is a female empowerment anthem. She said the “Bodak Yellow” hitmaker and the “Savage” raptress are “completely wrong” if they think the song does “anything to empower women.”
