Emma Corrin Worked as Reader for 'The Crown' Audition Before Being Cast as Diana

    Netflix

The British actress who plays Princess Diana on the controversial fourth season of the Netflix hit royal drama series actually had a different role during audition.

    Dec 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Emma Corrin was brought in as a reader on “The Crown” before she was cast as Princess Diana.
The British actress was a relative unknown before landing the prestigious role in the fourth season of the Netflix drama. However, casting director Robert Sterne has revealed that she was actually involved in the programme in a different capacity at first.
Explaining that Emma was acting as a reader opposite the actresses auditioning for the role of Camilla Parker-Bowles in the show, Sterne told Elle magazine, “I usually read in all these meetings, but we decided because it was this major scene that we would get somebody to come in (for Diana).”
“We asked Emma to come in, not thinking about casting Diana at this point. But as she was reading with these Camillas, all the directors and the showrunner were looking more at her and not at the people playing Camilla – who will remain nameless, of course. When we got to thinking about Diana a year later, there she was in my notes.”

Emma was later cast as Diana opposite Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles while Emerald Fennell landed the part of Camilla.
The fourth season of “The Crown” caused big reactions as it focused on the relationship between Princess Diana, then-husband Prince Charles, and his lover Camilla.
The heir apparent to the British throne and his now-wife Camilla were forced to shut off the comment sections on their Twitter and Instagram due to backlash from Diana’s supporters.
British minister even asked Netflix to add a disclaimer warning fans that the show was a fiction, but the streaming service refused. Instead, the company promoted a documentary called “Diana: In Her Own Words” amid the controversy.

Emma Corrin Draw Parallels Between 'The Crown' to 'Succession' Over Fiction Disclaimer Issue

    Netflix/HBO

The actress portraying Princess Diana in season four of the hit series has joined co-star Josh O’Connor in defending Netflix’s decision not to make it clear that the show is a work of fiction.

    Dec 17, 2020
AceShowbiz – Emma Corrin does not find it necessary for Netflix to label “The Crown” as a work of fiction. Although a number of prominent figures in the U.K. have called for the addition of a fiction disclaimer to the hit series, the actress playing Princess Diana in season four defended the streaming giant’s adverse decision by likening it to “Succession”.
The 25-year-old actress weighed in on the controversy when talking to Marc Malkin from her London apartment for an upcoming episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket”. During which, she stressed, “It is very clearly a dramatized version of events. This is fictitious in the same way people don’t mistake ‘Succession’ for what actually happened with the Murdochs.”
While she backed Netflix’s choice against the adding of the fiction disclaimer, the “Misbehaviour” actress did acknowledge the intention behind the request in the first place. “I also understand [the request] comes from a place of sensitivity and protectiveness of the royal family and Diana,” she pointed out.

The call for disclaimers came in late November when British culture minister Oliver Dowden urged Netflix to make it clear that “The Crown” is a work of fiction. “It’s a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that,” he told The Mail on Sunday. “Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.”
Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, also offered similar thought on the TV series. “I think it would help ‘The Crown’ an enormous amount if, at the beginning of each episode, it stated that, ‘This isn’t true but it is based around some real events,’ ” he voiced his concerns to ITV. “I worry people do think that this is gospel and that’s unfair.”
Netflix, however, stood its ground. “We have always presented ‘The Crown’ as a drama — and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events,” it responded to the call through a statement. “As a result we have no plans — and see no need — to add a disclaimer.”
Also defending the streaming giant’s decision was Emma’s co-star Josh O’Connor. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times podcast “The Envelope”, the Prince Charles depicter stated, “We were slightly let down by our culture secretary, whose job it is to encourage culture. In my opinion, it’s pretty outrageous that he came out and said what he said. Particularly, in this time when he knows that the arts are struggling and they’re on their knees, I think it’s a bit of a low blow.”

Emma Corrin Suffered From Whooping Cough During 'The Crown' Filming in Spain

    Netflix

The actress who plays Princess Diana in the new season 4 of the Netflix royal drama series secretly battled whooping cough while filming the show overseas.

    Nov 21, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The Crown” star Emma Corrin secretly battled whooping cough while filming the royal drama series.
The actress tells Interview magazine she was only able to recover from her bout of illness after a trip abroad to film her final scene was cancelled earlier this year (20).
Whooping cough is a bacterial infection of the lungs and breathing tubes, with symptoms including bouts of coughing and gasping for breath. While it can be most dangerous in babies and children, adults can still suffer nosebleeds and sore ribs and may be treated with antibiotics.
The revelation comes after Emma, who also suffers from asthma, shared that she was rushed to hospital while filming the Netflix show in Spain due to “low oxygen levels” after recording a swimming pool scene.

“I’m asthmatic and had been ill for a while with a cough,” she previously told Glamour U.K. “I had to film a scene in a freezing cold swimming pool. It was the hardest scene to film because I was genuinely keeping myself alive treading water.
“We were meant to be flying back that night to the U.K. and went past a hospital to get antibiotics. The doctors gave me an oxygen test and said, ‘We can’t let you go because your oxygen levels are so low’, so I was hospitalised.”
Season four of “The Crown”, which also stars Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher and Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, is streaming now.
Emma Corrin was added to the cast ensemble to play Princess Diana in the new season.

    Nov 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actress Emma Corrin had to be hospitalised for oxygen treatment after shooting a suffocating scene for “The Crown” in a Spanish swimming pool.
The young star portrays the late Diana, Princess of Wales, in the new season of the hit Netflix show and recalls a gruelling shoot in Spain that culminated with a surprise health scare ahead of her flight back home to the United Kingdom.
“I’m asthmatic and had been ill for a while with a cough,” Emma tells Glamour U.K. of the scary incident. “I had to film a scene in a freezing cold swimming pool. It was the hardest scene to film because I was genuinely keeping myself alive treading water.”
“We were meant to be flying back that night to the U.K. and went past a hospital to get antibiotics. The doctors gave me an oxygen test and said, ‘We can’t let you go because your oxygen levels are so low’ so I was hospitalised.”

And then things got really weird for Emma as staff realised who she was and what she was doing in Spain.
“I remember the nurses figuring out what I was filming and saying, ‘Would you like us to put a cardboard box over your heard so nobody recognises you?’ ” she laughs.
Emma had been recreating the real-life 1983 tour of Australia Princess Diana took with her then-husband Prince Charles, portrayed by Josh O’Connor, during her filming stint in Spain.
Season 4 of “The Crown”, which also stars Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher and Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, debuts on Netflix on Sunday (15Nov20).

Emma Corrin Struggled to Learn Ballet at 24 to Prepare for Her Role as Princess Diana in 'The Crown'

    Netflix

The ‘Pennyworth’ actress opens up about the biggest challenge when it comes to portraying Lady Diana Spencer in the upcoming fourth installment of the Netflix royal drama series.

    Nov 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Emma Corrin’s biggest challenge in her portrayal of Princess Diana came during the dancing scenes.
The actress, 24, debuts on the fourth season of “The Crown”, which hits Netflix on 15 November (20), with the latest instalment documenting Prince Charles’ romance with Lady Diana Spencer.
Speaking to MailOnline, Corrin confessed that learning her steps for Diana’s favourite past time didn’t come easy, admitting, “I definitely could not dance!”
“Diana’s love of dance was how she expressed herself emotionally, I think,” shared the star, who went on to note that, for her, picking up the routines was frustrating.

“There was a running joke at school that I danced like a spider because my limbs are too long,” she said, adding, “It’s hard to learn ballet when you’re 24! I really held on to the fact that Diana wasn’t a professional dancer.”
Corrin’s admissions come after it was reported by The Sun that the show will air a warning to viewers before episodes covering Diana’s battle with bulimia.
“The following episode includes scenes of an eating disorder which some viewers may find troubling. Viewers discretion is required,” says the notice, ahead of moments showing the late royal gorging on puddings before going into the bathroom and turning on taps to mask the sound of her being sick.
The life and legacy of Lady Diana will also be narrated in a biopic called “Spencer”. She will be played by Kristen Stewart in the movie.
The American actress recently admitted she struggled to master Diana’s English lilt. “The accent is intimidating as all hell because people know that voice, and it’s so, so distinct and particular,” she said. “I’m working on it now and already have my dialect coach.”

  • Emma Corrin on 'The Crown' Role: I Get a Great Sense of Companionship From Princess Diana

    WENN/FayesVision

Speaking about her portrayal of the tragic royal on the the hit drama, the 24-year-old actress recalls the reaction she got when she wore a replica of the royal’s iconic wedding dress.
    Sep 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actress Emma Corrin spent so long researching Princess Diana for her new role as the tragic royal in “The Crown”, she felt like her friend.
The 24-year-old will be introduced as Diana in the upcoming season of the hit drama, and she tells British Vogue she has done her homework.
“I feel I’ve got to know Diana like you would a friend,” Emma explains. “I know that sounds really weird, but I get a great sense of companionship from her. I suppose, over time, you kind of start to patch together a sense of empathy and a sense of understanding. I love figuring people out.”

Corrin was thrust into the royal role by filming scenes of Diana in her iconic wedding dress, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel.
“The Emanuels, who designed the original, gave us the patterns, and then it was made for me,” the actress shares. “We were filming the scene when you first see her in the wedding dress… and I had a team of about 10 people helping me put it on, because it’s massive. I walked out and everyone went completely silent.”
