Tipping Point fans have been left baffled after a contestant suggested Virgin boss Richard Branson broke a world record for crossing for being the first person to cross the Atlantic ocean in a hand glider.
In today’s episode (April 21) Oona was asked by host Ben Shephard what aerial mode of transport Branson and his partner Per Lindstrand used to make the first successful transatlantic crossing in July 1987?.
She passed the question to fellow player Nkeiru, who answered a “parasail” – but the correct answer was hot air balloon, with Branson and Lindstrand crossing 3,075 miles of open water during their record-breaking feat.
Shephard asked Ooza what answer she would have given and she replied that a hand glider would have been one of her guesses – much to the astonishment of viewers who rushed to Twitter to comment on the blunder.
One person said: “Hand glider… 3000 miles, wow windy day.”
Another exclaimed: “A f***ing hand glider?!”
A third wrote: “Crossing the Atlantic in a hand glider…FFS”
A fourth added: “Oona though Richard Branson crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a hand glider.”
After the question was passed to Nkeiru, she seemed unsure about the answer, telling Ben: “So you have aeroplanes and helicopters but then wouldn’t you also include a parasail in that. I’m gonna go with a parasail.”
Ben then asked Oona if she had any guesses at what the answer might be?
She replied: “I thought it might have been a hand glider but I wasn’t sure.”
About 32 hours after Branson and Lindstrand started their journey in Maine on 2 July 1987, they touched down just outside Limavady, County Londonderry.
Earlier this month viewers told of their disliking of the new show format after it returned for a new series.
Viewers were baffled over changes in the new series – such as there now being only three contestants playing instead of four and no elimination after the first round.
The quick-fire question round has also been tweaked, so contestants are given 45 seconds to answer their questions instead of the usual 30 seconds.
Taking to Twitter, one annoyed viewer said: “Had enough. Bye tippers.”
Another disgruntled viewer commented: “Can’t watch this.”
