‘I was Hermione’s body double in Harry Potter – here’s what tricks I saw on set’

Harry Potter captured the hearts of children across the globe when the first film was released back in 2001.

Young fans watched Harry, Ron and Hermione’s adventures on the silver screen and many would have been envious to know what it was like to be inside Hogwarts.

Flick Miles had that exact experience after landing the role of Hermione’s body double for the first four movies.

Dobby’s inspiration

Flick explained that while on set, one of the production members used to bring in her four legged friends – which of course, everybody fell in love with.

However, one character designer was in awe of the pups for a totally different reason and used them as inspiration for one of the franchise’s most-loved characters.

Miles said: “A woman, Celia, who was a researcher brought her dogs in everyday. If you look closely, Dobby’s ears look like dog ears. They were based off this dog, Max!”

Flick said that the dogs would sit at the feet of the editing team and their floppy ears inspired Dobby the house-elf’s iconic look.

JK Rowling’s writing process

Emma Watson and Flick Miles helped to develop Hermione’s character

Being on set and performing as Hermoine actually helped JK Rowling shape Granger’s story.

Rowling, the mastermind behind the franchise, had not yet completed the books when filming began.

Flick explained: “When we began filming, not all the books were out so Hermione did develop into a different character. In the first scenes, she came across a bit know-it-all, then [compare it] to her relationship with Ron by the end.”

Flick first starred as Emma’s body double back in 2001

“As we were going along, JK Rowling was developing the character of Hermione. It was interesting to see which direction she went in.”

Miles branded Hermione as the most vital member of the Harry Potter cast, as she should – she helped create a bit of the Hogwarts student herself.

“She turns out to be, in my opinion, the most important character. She solved everything and got the boys out of trouble!”

Camera Tricks

As a young girl, Flick discovered many Hollywood camera secrets

Many Hollywood movies use smoke and mirrors to get the perfect shot and Flick saw some of these first hand.

She admitted that the scenes in the Great Hall were the most enjoyable and Miles saw the tricks right before her eyes.

Flick said: “When we filmed stuff in the Great Hall, that was always fun because everyone was always in. Harry, Ron, Hermione, me, the other doubles…”

She confirmed that the Great Hall “is as big as it looks” but the crew had a few tricks up their sleeves to make it appear ginormous.

While playing Hermione, Flick was involved in some real life camera sorcery

“What they do, they use camera tricks. If you were sitting one way, they’d film you and reverse it further along [the other way] to give the illusion that the table was longer than it was.”

“It’s still a huge room though!”

Flick’s podcast Behind the Wand is available here on Apple Podcasts and here on Spotify.

Miles also posts longer, extended cuts of the interviews on her YouTube channel and fans can keep up with Flick by following her Instagram profile.
