Mack agreed to Chloe’s conditions, and so Chloe corroborated his true version of events – that the gun had gone off in Charity’s hand. With Chloe’s sister Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson) now witness to her scheme, Chloe remained determined to take Reuben out of the country straight away.

As Charity attempted to change Chloe’s mind, Chloe allowed Mack the chance to say goodbye to their son. Things turned emotional as Mack lovingly told Reuben that he would grow up to be good and kind, and have an amazing life. Amy tried to plead with Chloe, but nothing could change her mind as she took Reuben from Mack’s arms and drove away, as a shellshocked Charity and heartbroken Mack looked on.

Elsewhere in the village next week, Oscar Grisham (Harley Hamilton) arrives and reveals to Gail Loman (Rachael Gill-Davis, Ryan Stocks (James Moore) and Charity that his mum knows about his secret visit to the village. He’s sheepish as he’s encouraged to go home but Sophie Grisham (Martha Cope) bursts in, angry.

Gail and Charity are thrown when Ryan retorts, unleashing his hurt. After Charity takes Oscar away to give them space, Gail, to Ryan’s surprise, forgives guilty Sophie, but reminds her that they’re upset to have been cut off, and the decision should be up to Oscar.

Later, Charity is unsure how much to reveal to Oscar, but Mack encourages her to keep things simple. Curious Oscar cannot help but probe Charity for answers about Ryan’s father, but admitting her age to her grandson, Oscar works out the implications of the difference.

He reassures relieved Charity that he’s glad his grandfather is no longer around. After Sophie and Oscar apologise to each other, she agrees to give him a chance to see Gail and Ryan again. Ryan’s dad is Mark Bails, who abused and raped Charity when she was a teenager which resulted in him fathering Ryan.

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
