Have I Got News for You panelist and Private Eye editor Ian Hislop has been left with a bandaged head after another road incident, this one involving an electric bike
Ian Hislop needed medical attention after being struck by an electric bike.
The 64-year-old journalist has been a panelist on the BBC’s satire show Have I Got News for You since it first aired in 1990. He was recently left shaken up after fears he’d been shot at in a London taxi.
The Private Eye editor was crossing the road in London when he got hit by the electric bike. He needed medical attention and was later seen with a bandage on his head at an event in the city, but he escaped with no serious injuries.
A representative for Private Eye, which Hislop has edited since 1986, confirmed he had been “hit by an electric bike whilst crossing the road yesterday afternoon.” It is not the first road accident Hislop has been a victim of this year.
In October, the journalist was told he was shot at while riding in the back of a taxi cab on Soho’s Dan Street at 10am. The driver believed a bullet had struck the rear window of the vehicle after it shattered.
However, police later attributed the smashed window to a mechanical issue with the car. After reviewing CCTV footage and forensically examining the taxi, police concluded there is “no evidence of a firearms discharge at this time”.
A BBC source said Hislop had been left “freaked out” by the accident, claiming: “For nearly a whole day he genuinely thought he’d been shot at.” Hislop joked about the incident on Have I Got News for You, where he is a team captain.
He quipped: “I always say at this point I’m glad to be here, but this week I really mean it.” Ian also said in a statement he wanted to “thank everyone for their concern”, adding it was “greatly appreciated”.
He said: “The police investigating the incident in the taxi have now advised me that they have completed their forensic tests, have found no evidence of a firearm discharge and will be concentrating their investigations on indications that a mechanical fault caused the window to shatter. Thanks again to all concerned for their support and concern.”
