Laura Tobin overslept after boozy night out and had to ‘phone in’ weather forecast

Good Morning Britain weather presenter Laura Tobin has admitted she once overslept for work after a boozy night out and had to “phone in” to tell bosses the forecast.

The presenter revealed she “passed out” with her phone on silent after winning The Ultimate News Quiz with colleagues and woke up feeling a “little worse for wear”. The 42-year-old meteorologist had slept through her alarm and missed “lots” of calls from her boss but said they weren’t cross because she eventually arrived with the trophy.

Tobin told the Monday Mile podcast: “There’s this one time, there was The Ultimate News Quiz – it’s a massive thing at a big venue. There must be about 50 or 60 tables, ITV, ITV News, Good Morning Britain, BBC News, Sky, all different companies and I think there’s 10 people in the team. Two years ago, we won The Ultimate News Quiz.”

The quiz is held annually in London and involves teams from broadcast news organisations competing in aid of Action for Children. She continued: “I was like, okay, I’m going to go home, be really good, I’m going to not stay up to late – no. We won, drank loads, I woke up.

“I had my phone on silent and I was staying in town. I hadn’t set my alarm because I just literally passed out on the bed – in all my clothes.”

Tobin said her phone was on silent because she was doing a quiz and as a “competitive person” – she wanted to “win legitimately”. The meteorologist continued: “My boss was trying to phone my phone, but it was on silent.

“She was phoning the hotel, and they wouldn’t let her phone the room for security reasons. In the end, after lots and lots and lots of phoning, they eventually got through to the taxi driver who went inside and asked them to call up to me.

“I just answered the phone with a swear word, because I looked at my phone and it was six o clock. I turned up at Good Morning Britain at half past six.”

Tobin said newsreader Charlotte Hawkins, 48, “had already read my first weather cast for me”. She added: “I had to phone in and tell them what I was going to say even though I didn’t really know.

“I turned up with like half hair and makeup done, the makeup ladies just had to go ‘That will do’. Then I went on air, but I had to turn up, because I had the trophy. So work weren’t cross, because I turned up, barely, little worse for wear, but we’d won – had a trophy.”
