The singer, best known for his stint in One Direction, fell a total of 45ft from the third-floor balcony of his suite. Hotel staff had called emergency services prior to the fall, but when they arrived he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a phone call to the emergency services in Buenos Aires, one frantic worker said: “I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger. The room has a balcony and we are afraid he might do something.”

Liam, who was measured as being 5ft 10 inches – around 178 centimetres – was placed in a room with a balcony around 4ft high. Police and hotel staff are now questioning whether the balcony was too low to stop him from accidentally falling over.

Moments before his death, Liam was reported as having fallen “flat on his face” in the foyer of the resort, with staff helping him to his feet and taking him up to his room. The frantic worker, named as Esteban, soon called for “only an ambulance” to the resort, arriving at the scene seven minutes after the fall.

An initial autopsy confirmed that Liam had suffered “multiple traumas” as a result of the fall, which in turn led to “internal and external bleeding”. The report added that due to the force caused by the fall, some of the injuries to his head alone could have been enough to cause death.

Fans of the singer have since gathered outside the hotel to leave flowers and condolences to the star, singing his songs and lighting candles in his memory. Liam’s family have also led tributes to the star, saying they are heartbroken at the news of his sudden death.

They added further time will be needed before they speak publicly again as a group, but “the memories we shared with him will be treasured forever”.
