Neighbours might be shortly coming to an end but another Australian soap is still just as popular as ever.
Home and Away premiered in January of 1988 and it follows the lives of those living in the fictional seaside town Summer Bay, in New South Wales.
And there was one relationship in particular that ensured viewers were hooked to their screens.

Dieter Brummer made his debut on the soap in 1992 playing the role of Shane Parrish. He was 15 at the time of his audition but received instant recognition for his part on the drama, later admitting to having found the attention “bizarre”.
Meanwhile Melissa George arrived on the soap in 1993 as teenage runaway Angel and stayed in the role until 1996.
Together the character’s of Angel and Shane were paired together and to this day remain one of the soap’s most loved couples. However, behind the scenes it was a different story.
It’s been widely reported there was animosity between the actors when the cameras were not rolling.

In 2012, Dieter spoke to Woman’s Day where he exclaimed: “We may have been love interests on the show but the chemistry was far from real.”
In the end, the character of Shane Parrish was killed off in March of 1996, suffering blood poisoning. It was been widely reported this was after he allegedly begged producers to give his character a dramatic ending that same year.
How did Dieter and Melissa’s feud start?

Not too much is known about the origins of the feud, however in the same 2012 interview with Woman’s Day, Dieter hinted his co-star’s alleged on-set behaviour and her ambition to be like Neighbours star Kylie Minogue might have caused a few issues.
He explained: “Mel was incredibly ambitious right from the outset.”
The actor added: “I think she wanted to be the next Kylie Minogue … She was a big fan and she aspired to be a big star just like Kylie. I don’t think she had much time for the cast of Home and Away.”

Melissa only confirmed the pair did not get on well on the soap’s set in 2018 as part of the TV special, Endless Summer.
On the programme, the actress blamed the pressures of fame and the demands from fans for their disagreements where she explained that their relationship was different behind the scenes than it was on screen.
She said: “There was a lot of pressure on us … We had to look like the perfect darling couple in public.”

It was first revealed to be not all what it seemed when Brummer quit the soap in the 90s.
He stated at the time: “I know there’s life after Home And Away and I’m not afraid of it. Now it’s time to move on.”
It seemed that their fellow co-stars also noticed drama on the set as well as in front of the cameras as Ray Meagher, who played Alf Stewart, once commented.
He explained: “I’m not sure that they got on personally 100 per cent, 100 per cent of the time.”

Dieter later clapped back at Melissa after the actress slammed the soap opera when Seven Network’s The Morning Show referred to her as a “Home and Away” actress.
She later raged: “My next call will be to Home and Away to ask them to pay me because nobody does more promotion for that f***ing show than me.”
Melissa added: “I don’t need credibility from my country anymore; I just need them all to be quiet.”
The actor called her comments “unnecessary and a bit ridiculous,” before having one last dig at his former co-star adding: “but then, that’s Mel.”
