Overloaded with paperwork, Kate Garraway is struggling to deal with her family’s finances since her husband Derek’s devastating hospitalisation earlier this year.
The 53-year-old opened up about her financial issues during an interview on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, speaking with hosts and her longtime friends Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.
Her husband Derek Draper, also 53, was admitted to intensive care with coronavirus in March and woke up from an induced coma four months later.
Though he made a breakthrough last week – uttering his first word in over 200 days – Derek’s condition continues to leave Kate and her family heartbroken.
Appearing on GMB, Kate revealed she is struggling to process the paperwork for her family’s day-to-day life, as everything is signed off in Derek’s name.
She said: “One of the practical problems – which a lot of people would’ve experienced if they’ve got the absence of someone in their life – like many things the car is entirely in Derek’s name, the insurance is in Derek’s name, a lot of our bank accounts.
“There are a lot of financial goings that I’ve talked to you both about going on, which is making life very complicated because I can’t get access to things.”
Kate continued: “Because legally I haven’t got power of attorney. And all this other stuff that goes on when you’re dealing with a situation where someone’s been sick for a long time.”
The revelation came after the mum-of-two revealed her family car, affectionately nicknamed “Vicky Volvo,” had been thieved from outside her home.
The loss of the car, which the family had owned for 20 years, has been a particular blow to Kate’s kids, Billy, 11, and Darcey, 14, following their dad’s hospitalisation.

Breaking news of the theft, she told her co-stars: “Initially I thought it’s bound to be an unpaid parking ticket that Derek hasn’t been able to sort out while out of action since March and it’s probably gone through a system and it’s been impounded – but it’s actually been stolen.”
Describing the car, she added: “It’s silver, it’s battered, it’s old, it’s got a roof box.”
Utterly outraged, Piers leapt to Kate’s defence, sickened by the crime as he branded the culprits as “scumbags”.
He fumed: “Let me get this straight. Some little scumbag or scumbags have come to your house and stolen your car when you’re going through what you’re going through.
“It is absolutely disgusting. If you know someone who has this car… It makes me puke that someone has done this.”
Urging local car dealers to spare a Volvo for Kate, he added: “We’ll get your car situation fixed today.”
Piers then made a plea to the thieves, saying: “It’s got sentimental value. It is the family car and it’s the only one the two kids have known, it’s part of the family life.
“This family needs that car.”
Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
