Prince Harry has compared life in the Royal Family to an “echo chamber”.
The Duke of Sussex sat down with American actor Dax Shepard for an intimate chat about mental health, lurking paparazzi and life as a Royal on his Armchair Expert podcast.
He even compared his life to the 1998 Jim Carrey film The Truman Show, and likened it to being “in a zoo” with people watching him from all directions.
It came as host Dax was asking Harry if he ever watched films or television outside of his royal bubble.
“Did you watch movies and TV with a particular interest, or do you not even recall?” he wondered.
“No, I just watched royal movies,” Harry said sarcastically. “Just to really make sure that my echo chamber was absolutely solid, impenetrable.
“This is my entire life, this is what I’m gonna learn about, this is everything – all I ever want to do,” he joked.
Giggling, Dax said: “No, well of course you watched it, but did you watch it with the kind of reverse curiosity [about fairy tales]?”
“I watched Disney!” Harry laughed.
“It must be bizarre being told this story with royalty as the ultimate prize, and for you to just be sitting there feeling like it’s normal,” Dax pointed out. “Thinking that this doesn’t feel all that euphoric. That would be a real cognitive dissonance moment.”
Harry agreed: “All these little girls reading these wonderful fairy tales, thinking ‘All I want to be is a princess. And I’m just thinking well…” he said with a groan.
He shared a quote from his wife Meghan Markle: “You don’t need to be a princess, you can create a life that will be better than any princess.”
Wise words indeed.
“That’s coming from her own lived experience,” Harry said.
Elsewhere on the podcast, Harry said he finds living in the US a “freeing” experience despite paparazzi “pouncing on” him and Meghan.
“Living here now I can actually lift my head and actually I feel different, my shoulders have dropped, so have [Meghan’s], you can walk around feeling a little bit more free,” Harry said.

“I can take Archie on the back of my bicycle. I never had the chance to do that.”
He joked: “Now that I’ve said that [paparazzi] are probably going to be there – but I would never have had the chance to do that [at home].”
