Boy George lost £200k fee after judge banned him from lucrative Big Brother stint

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! fans were not happy as Boy George slammed his co-star Scarlette Douglas when she asked about his previous assault.

And it turns out the star was banned from a rival reality show as a judge stopped him from going on Celebrity Big Brother.

Yesterday (November 16), the Karma Chameleon singer – real name George O’Dowd – made it clear he wasn’t happy with the Channel 4 star’s line of questioning.

He pleaded not guilty to false imprisonment at the time, and has consistently denied that he beat Carlsen with a chain.

He was, however, convicted, and sentenced to 15 months behind bars. He served four months and was released with an ankle monitor for good behaviour.

George confessed to Scarlette that there were “just handcuffs” as he said: “But the radiator bit wasn’t true, but thanks for bringing it up.”

Fans were fuming over his dismissal of the incident, which – in addition to his prison stint – saw him banned from an appearance on Celebrity Big Brother.

Shortly after his release from prison, the Culture Club singer requested permission to appear on the show, but it was rejected by a judge.

The court heard at the time: “An offender serving the non-custodial part of a sentence of imprisonment should not be allowed to take part in a high profile, controversial television production, promoting his status as a celebrity and with considerable financial gain.”

The judge added that an appearance might cause Carlsen distress and lead to details of the offence being revived in the media.

The ruling at the time reportedly cost Boy George a £200,000 fee from the programme.

Boy George’s solicitor Louis Charalambous said outside court that he was “disappointed” at the decision.

He explained: “Boy George is very disappointed by the outcome. If he was a plumber it is accepted he could have worked and this is work for Boy George.”

Charalambous added that the decision “discriminated” against pop stars.
