“Relatable” Prince Charles can do EastEnders alongside wife Camilla because he isn’t “fame hungry” like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, one PR expert has claimed.
The news broke last week that Charles and Camilla are set to star in the BBC One soap to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next weekend.
Their episode will air on June 2 at 7:30pm.
It comes after Charles appeared in the December 2000 live episode of Coronation Street, seen in footage on a TV news bulletin on a supposed visit to Weatherfield to see then-Councillor Audrey Roberts.
But in other news, Meghan Markle’s “special” Netflix series has faced the axe.
So why is it okay for some royals to live it up on TV, but not for others?
Exposure PR guru Lucy Hood thinks it’s because Charles and Camilla simply aren’t “fame mad” like Harry and Meghan.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, she explained: “Off the cuff straight away…. I think it is to do with the programmes.
“Both Eastenders and Coronation Street are hugely respected British institutions rather than the US based Netflix, they feel like sort of warm warm comfy blankets.
“In 2025 Eastenders will have been running for 40 years… it has an average of 2.7 million viewers. Corrie has even higher viewing figures. People actually live and breathe those soaps and don’t see the characters as actors but as people.”
Lucy added that she doubts Brits think Charles and Camilla are “fame mad”, explaining: “They see their motivation as being wholly different from Meghan and Harry.
“They think Meghan is insincere because she was an American actress first and foremost, and very much courted that celebrity life and I don’t think Brits are overly comfortable with that.
“We like our Royals to be Royals with all the pomp, ceremony and tradition that comes with it. If they want to get closer to us by a guest appearance in one of our favourite British TV soaps then that is great. That’s how I think the public thinks… honestly.”
According to Lucy, Charles’ TV appearances are “very strategic”.
She elaborated: “Charles is likely to become King in the not too distant future. He isn’t actually that relatable at the moment due to his age and interests.
“I think his PR team will be thinking of ways of getting more public support behind him and making him more accessible before he takes the throne. To tie it to the Jubilee means that it doesn’t seem so contrived.”
