Coronation Street star pays tribute to beloved character as she makes emotional exit

Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson has paid tribute to her character Kelly Neelan after she made her exit on Friday night (September 23).

Millie had played the troubled teen for four years, first arriving in Weatherfield to find out what happened to her dad Rick Neelan (Greg Wood).

On Friday night, the end of Kelly’s story came as she decided to leave the cobbles after a dramatic few weeks.

Actress Millie shared a series of photos to her Instagram from her time on the ITV soap, with a focus on her nail-biting final few scenes.

She wrote in the caption: “It’s with a very heavy, but full heart that it is time to say goodbye to Kelly Neelan.

“These past four years have been like no other and I can’t begin to describe how much I’m going to miss this place and the people in it.

“Everyone that has been a part of this storyline has been nothing but incredible and I couldn’t have asked for a better block to end on.”

She went on: “I’ve had the honour of being surrounded by such talent and kindness over the years and have met friends and a second family for life.

“I’ll never forget my time here or the memories it has given me.

“I can’t say thank you enough for letting me be a small piece of the Coronation Street family. Bye for now, Kel.”

Her co-stars were quick to comment, with former Corrie star Charlie De Melo, who played Imran Habeeb, writing: “I am so proud of you, Amelia.”

Alexandra Mardell, who played Emma Brooker, said: “Go on gorj girlie!”

Craig Tinker actor Colson Smith said: “Good luck Gibbo.”

Pal Tanisha Gorey, who plays Asha Alahan, said: “My baby forever.”

And Kel Allen, who played Kelly’s mum Laura, said: “So, so proud of you my girl. Cannot wait to watch you smash these episodes out of the park when I’m back in the UK. Celebrations when I’m home. Neelans forever! You’ll always be my babba.”

On Corrie, Kelly decided to leave the cobbles to go somewhere she could be “just Kelly” after a dramatic few weeks.

She finally learned that Gary Windass (Mikey North) was the one who killed her dad and put out a hit on him, though the hit-man double-crossed her.

He tried to make it look like a murder-suicide, but Kelly’s boyfriend Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain), whom she was set to marry, got shot in the process.

Kelly decided to keep Gary’s secret – and Aadi – safe but moving away – but with the character still alive, fans will no doubt be hoping for a return one day.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV
