Coronation Street resident Peter Barlow is about to reach a dark place.
The character, currently portrayed by Chris Gascoyne, has found himself in hot water after being charged with assault following his attack on the consultant who organised his liver transplant, Dr Thorne.
On the devastating chain of events, Gascoyne told Metro: “It’s started him on that path again, it’s confirming this self loathing for himself that he has laying underneath.
“It’s not an easy thing to live with, he is troubled and when he gets troubled like that and stops communicating with people again that’s when I don’t know where he’s going to go.
“What I do know is that the place he’s in at the moment is not a very good one.”
So, who else has played Peter Barlow? And, what are they up to now?
Robert Heanue (1965–1970)
Robert Heanue was the first actor to play Peter Barlow.
Born the same year as the character in 1965 in Cheshire, he was introduced as the child of Valerie Barlow (Anne Reid) and Ken Barlow (William Roache).
The character also had a twin sister, Susan.
Robert left the ITV soap five years into his stint.
He has not continued acting.
Chris Dormer (1970–1971) and Mark Duncan (1971)
Chris Dormer played Peter Barlow from 1970 until 1971.
Aged seven, he was written out of the soap due to his real life parents’ emigration to Canada and while he hasn’t acted since, Chris remembers his time on the soap as a positive experience.
He previously told The Mirror: “I really enjoyed the Street. I remember Pat Phoenix and Julie Goodyear kissing and tickling me because they thought I was cute.”
Mark Duncan played the character after Chris’ exit.
He made a sole appearance in the soap as Peter and his sister Susan exited Weatherfield to live with their grandmother.
Linus Roache (1973–1975)
Linus Roache is a true Peter Barlow.
He is the real-life son of actor William Roache, who plays Peter’s dad Ken Barlow, and actress Anna Cropper.
Linus portrayed Peter in a handful of episodes from 1973 – 1975.
Following in the footsteps of his real-life and onscreen father, he continued acting and later returned to Coronation Street as another of Ken Barlow’s sons.
The actor portrayed Lawrence Cunningham, another son of Ken Barlow, upon his return to Coronation Street in 2010.
And, similar to his Peter Barlow experience, Linus only portrayed the character in a small number of episodes before bowing out from the ITV soap.
Linus has gone on to form a successful acting career.
The now 58-year-old actor has appeared in shows including Homeland, Vikings and Law & Order: SVU.
Joseph McKenna (1977–1978)
Joseph McKenna became the fifth child actor to portray Peter Barlow.
He played Peter for a number of episodes between 1977 – 1978.
Following his Coronation exit, Joseph continued acting and starred in TV series The Camerons and the 1986 blockbuster Absolute Beginners alongside David Bowie and Patsy Kensit.
Alas, his acting career was to be short-lived.
In the mid-1980s, Joseph quit acting and later became a fashion editor.
David Lonsdale (1986)
David Lonsdale is the sixth and penultimate actor to portray Peter Barlow.
The actor took up the role upon Peter’s brief return to Coronation Street in 1986.
Appearing in eight episodes of the ITV soap, David marked the last iteration of the character to be seen on screens for 14 years.
Following his Weatherfield exit, the actor 58-year-old actor has carved out a successful acting career.
David later appeared as David Stockwell in ITV police drama Heartbeat. He also featured in the 1997 hit film, The Full Monty.
In 2012, he returned to Coronation Street as Ed Soames.
The actor also appeared on another ITV soap and filmed three episodes as a character called Glen on Emmerdale.
Recently, he has appeared in ITV dramas The Bay and The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe.
Chris Gascoyne (2000-present)
Chris Gascyone is the seventh and final actor to portray Peter Barlow thus far.
The character returned to Weatherfield in 2000 before both he and Chris departed the street three years later in 2003.
Chris reprised the role of Peter in 2007 and has stayed in a recurring role ever since.
Having played the character for more years than anyone else, the 54-year-old actor has become a street legend and is today one of the show’s longest-spanning cast members.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV at 8pm
