Love Island to cast 'first ever deaf contestant on this year's series'

It has been reported that a 23-year-old dancer and model, Natasha Ghouri, is a part of this year’s exciting new Love Island line up.

The blonde babe was born deaf and if reports from The Sun are correct, she will be the show’s first ever deaf contestant.

Natasha modelled for ASOS last year, and appeared in an advert that showed her cochlear implant. This amazing campaign that Natasha was a part of was a viral hit, and gained lots of great feedback from the public.

The campaign read: “No matter what disability you’ve got, you can do it.”

She has more than 17,000 followers on Instagram, and shared the touching responses she received from the campaign in the highlights on her profile.

Natasha posed wearing earrings, with the implant in view. One fan wrote: “I was pleased to see a model wearing a hearing device. As a deaf person myself it is wonderful to see.”

Another wrote: “Hi! I have had 2 hearing aids since birth and your asos pictures and attitude has helped me to feel more confident about not hiding them away with my hair. So thank you, your representation is rly positive.”

The cochlear implant is an electronic device that helps those hard of hearing to be able to hear. There is an external portion that is fitted behind the ear, and the other part is inserted surgically.

Unlike a hearing aid, which makes sounds louder, the device sends impulses directly to the nerves that help you hear, which is then sent to the brain.

Natasha is said to be one of the first contestants to enter the show this year, which is set in a brand-new villa on the Mallorca island.

Speaking to The Sun, Annie Harris from the Royal National Institute for Deaf People said: “We are really pleased that another major TV show is featuring a deaf contestant. Representation matters.”

This comes after Rose Ayling-Ellis, who plays Frankie Lewis on EastEnders, won last year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

This year’s highly anticipated Love Island will air on Monday 6 June, at 9pm, for around an hour and a half, as they introduce this year’s sizzling line up of singles.

The eighth series of Love Island will be even longer than previous years, running for a total of eight weeks.
