Scooby Doo star furious that he had to take 'pay cut' for sequel

Hollywood star Freddie Prinze Jr has opened up about the dismay he felt after being forced to take an alleged pay cut to star in 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

The 46-year old, who has been married to Buffy actress and fellow Scooby-Doo star, Sarah Michelle Gellar for 20 years, was left frustrated when producers asked him to take the cut in order for co-stars to get a raise.

Father-of-two Freddie said he took issue with studio Warner Bros, who he said should have taken responsibility for paying them, rather than have his own wages cut to make up the difference.

“I remember thinking, ‘Hold up, who’s giving them the raise? Me or y’all?’ Like we made you guys three-quarters of a billion dollars, you can’t afford to pay them what I’m making on this? Screw that,” he told Esquire.

The actor played Fred in two live-action adaptions in the noughties of the Hanna Barbera animated TV series.

Wife Gellar, meanwhile, was cast in the role of Daphne, whilst Scream star Matthew Lillard and Legally Blonde’s Linda Cardellini played Shaggy and Velma respectively.

Prinze expressed further disappointment that the studio divulged his salary in a magazine in order to encourage him to go along with the cut, which he said made his ego “so angry”.

After that he said he was “done” with the franchise.

Over time, however, the She’s All That actor said his perspective has mellowed thanks to social media, viewing the movie as meaningful to fans, rather than a cash-grab.

“All these people that had grown up loving those movies started reaching out…and then I got what I felt was a more accurate perspective on what that movie meant to people because I was no longer viewing it through the lenses of the studio,” he explained.

The Daily Star has approached Warner Bros for comment.
