Richard Hammond joined the Top Gear cast back in 2002 and along with his pals Jeremy Clarkson and James May, the trio ruled the television with their car related hijinks and hilarious one liners.
Despite the fact the men love cars and everything to do with them, Richard has seen himself in a spot of bother involving a motor vehicle more than once.
Since Top Gear, Hammond, Clarkson and May have moved on to The Grand Tour – and things haven’t changed.

Richard has become notorious for the multiple car accidents throughout his career, his most well known being the time he ended up in a coma.
Keep reading to dive into Hammond’s worst car accidents – some near-fatal.
Two week coma
While he was filming for BBC’s Top Gear, Hammond was involved in a high speed car crash in a Vampire Dragster which nearly killed him.
The TV presenter was very lucky to survive but ended up in a coma for two weeks afterwards.
He opened up to The Times about the experience and how it has affected him in later life.
Richard admitted: “When I was initially in recovery, because it was frontal lobe injury, the doctor said one of the problems is what they call ‘lost keys syndrome’ […] Now, I regularly go into a room and I can’t remember what I went into it for […].”
Sadly, Hammond became depressed after suffering with the condition and struggled to “connect emotionally”.
He was eventually diagnosed with post-traumatic amnesia as a result of being unconscious for a long period of time.
Family struggles
Richard’s illness also had an adverse effect on his loved ones.
His wife Mindy appeared on ITV’s Loose Women ten years after the crash and spoke about his personality immediately after his recovery.
She revealed: “The recovery process, [people with brain injuries] struggle with emotions and things. He would sometimes sense that something was building […].”
Richard also spoke to Jonathon Ross in his first interview since the crash and admitted that his family were on edge, aware of any signs that may point toward further brain damage.
Rimac accident
Back in June 2017, Richard was filming for The Grand Tour and driving a Rimac Concept One supercar when he crashed once again.
He remained conscious during the accident (which was Hammond’s second while filming for the series) which, once again, could have killed him.
The car broke through a barrier and rolled as it fell downhill before it stopped upside down at the bottom.
Richard informed first responders not to pull him out by his feet as he thought he’d broken his leg and shortly after he was removed, the supercar went up in flames.
Luckily, his only injury was a fractured knee.
Other accidents
Richard fell off a motorcycle while filming for The Grand Tour in Mozambique and hit his head.
Although the presenter insisted he was fine, Jeremy later revealed that he had hurt himself “quite badly”.
For another episode of the series, Hammond drove a three-wheeler which he ended up flipping.
During yet another The Grand Tour episode, a photo emerged of the presenter standing by the wreckage of another vehicle.
This time, Richard was looking well as he placed his hands on his hips with dismay.
