BBC Strictly Come Dancing’s Zara McDermott ‘can’t believe it’ as she’s axed after dance off

The Strictly Come Dancing judges sent home Love Island star and documentary maker Zara McDermott and her partner Graziano Di Prima on Sunday night.

Zara and Graziano were placed in the bottom two following the public vote and ultimately had to face off against Adam Thomas and Luba Mushtuk. She had pulled in 25 points from the judges on Saturday night for her Charleston to Jeepers Creepers.

As she performed in her third dance off of the series, Zara failed to win over the judges. Ultimately they made a unanimous decision to save Adam and Luba. Motsi Mabuse praised the duo though and said there was a “fighting spirit” from both.

Zara told the judges: “I have had the time of my life. Just to be here is incredible. Thank you to the judges and my amazing partner obviously.

“My fellow contestants are just incredible. It has been the most amazing experience. I can’t believe it’s over but I am going to be here in spirit every week supporting them.”

Graziano told Zara he was “so proud” of her and said she is what the show is all about. He explained that Zara was “never stopping” in rehearsals and only ever asked for a half hour break.

The professional added: “She is literally what Strictly is all about. A real novice, coming in, putting all the hard job. You have such a good soul. You are so humble and I say thank you that I found a friend like you.”

He reiterated again that Zara had never danced before, adding: “I am so proud of you.” The duo will be joining Fleur East on Strictly: It Takes Two on Monday night.

Zara and Graziano’s exit comes days after Amanda Abbington confirmed she would not be returning to the dancefloor. TV bosses opted to not skip a week of eliminations and the show went ahead as normal.

The remaining contestants will now continue to battle it out to take home the Glitterball Trophy – and the competition is fierce. The judges have been dishing out some high scores, with Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola topping the board last night with a whopping 38 points.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday November 4 at 7.05pm on BBC One.
