Cereal lovers will eat the breakfast favourite for any meal, including snacks, study finds

It appears that cereal is not just for breakfast time, as peckish Brits will tuck into a bowl as a snack (34%), for lunch (13%), or even for dinner (10%), according to research.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that 87% like to munch on a bowl of the popular breakfast food, with 91% doing so the “traditional” way, as their first meal of the day.

But cereal lovers also like to be bold with their choices, as nearly half (47%) admit to mixing two different types together in a bowl – while 5% even combine at least four different cereals together.

Three in ten (29%) have carried this habit through to their adult lives, with 46% believing a mix of cereals tastes better – as four in ten pick options that complement each other.

Other reasons for tucking into multiple cereals at once include enjoying the different textures (24%), thinking it’s a fun thing to do (32%) – and simply not being able to choose just one (22%).

And almost two-thirds (63%) say they just love mixing cereals – with 35% even having recommended it to others.

The study was commissioned by Kellogg’s to launch the Kellogg’s Kombos Café, where customers can pick from 25 iconic Kellogg’s cereals, combining their top two for a fun and tasty take on the breakfast favourite.

A spokesman said: “For so many things, a combination of the two is often much better than when it’s on its own. You can combine all of the best bits of the different things you like, and save yourself a whole lot of time trying to choose between the two.

“Foods are often combined together to mix the taste or texture – and many love to do this with their cereal. Why should you have to pick just one?”

And it seems that cereal is not the only thing that gets better as part of a combo – as 88% of those polled believe that some things in life are just better as part of a pairing.

The survey revealed the top 50 best combos of all time, including fish and chips, Del Boy and Rodney, and Tom and Jerry.

Others included animated favourites such as Wallace and Gromit, Scooby Doo and Shaggy, and Shrek and Donkey, while fictional character couplings such as Batman and Robin, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, and Gavin and Stacey were also popular.

Meanwhile, popular real-life combos included Prince William and Catherine, Ant and Dec – and Wrexham football owners and Hollywood favourites, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Food also featured heavily on the list, taking up 15 places in the top 20 – with Brits loving nothing more than the combination of bread and butter, strawberries and cream, or cereal with a cuppa.

A spokesman for Kellogg’s added: “For many, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and we don’t want it to be boring.

“Mixing your cereals can brighten up your day, so we wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to tuck into their two favourite cereals in one bowl.”
