Full Monty star Tom Wilkinson dies ‘suddenly’ aged 75 as tributes flood in to ‘one of the best’

British Oscar-nominated actor Tom Wilkinson, best known for his role in The Full Monty, has died aged 75, his family have announced.

The star, who played former steel mill foreman Gerald Cooper in the comedy movie, died “suddenly” on Saturday (December 30) and his death was confirmed in a statement shared by his agent on behalf of his family.

The statement read: “It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he died suddenly at home on December 30. His wife and family were with him. The family asks for privacy at this time.” The star leaves behind actress wife Diana Hardcastle and two daughters together, Alice and Molly.

He was nominated for Academy Awards for actor in a leading role for In The Bedroom in 2001, and actor in a supporting role for Michael Clayton in 2007. He most recently reunited with his The Full Monty co-stars, Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy, in a Disney+ series of the same name.

The original 1997 comedy about an unlikely group of men stripping won an Oscar for best original musical or comedy score and was nominated for three others, including best picture and best director. Since the heartbreaking news was announced on Saturday (December 30), heartbroken and devastated fans have flooded X, formerly known as Twitter, with tributes to the acting legend.

One fan penned: “Noooo… not Tom Wilkinson.” Another added: “RIP Tom Wilkinson.” A third person said: “RIP Tom Wilkinson:He was brilliant in every part that he played.” Someone else wrote: “Oh no! Awful news ,thinking of his family and friends x” Tom has received various awards throughout his career, including a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy Award and nominations for two Academy Awards.

For his role in comedy film The Full Monty, he received the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. In 2009, he won a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Film for playing Benjamin Franklin in the HBO limited series John Adams.
