Hollywood isn’t always as glamorous as it appears. Often actors will take on gruelling roles that push their roles to the limits to wow viewers on the big screen.
But arguably one of the more awkward aspects about being an actor is filming sex scenes in a room full of camera operators and audio experts. Over the years, countless blockbuster stars have spoken out about how they have dealt with the uncomfortable scenes, which has seen a rise in intimacy coordinators on film sets.
One of the most outspoken actors to share their experiences filming sex scenes is Notting Hill star Julia Roberts. As the mum-of-three celebrates her 56th birthday with a bang, Daily Star has taken a look into how she tackled intimacy scenes throughout her career.

The brunette beauty’s first acting roles in Tinseltown included small roles in Mystic Pizza in 1988 and Steel Magnolias in 1989. But it was arguably her starring role in the 1990 hit romantic comedy Pretty Woman that catapulted her to stardom.
The film follows the love story of a prostitute named Vivian (played by Julia) and a wealthy businessman (Richard Gere) who fall madly in love with each other. After Edward hires Vivian to stay with him for the weekend, the two get closer only to discover they have two very different lives and work together to overcome their hurdles.
Loyal fans of the beloved rom-com will know the film gets pretty steamy in parts with the two actors even sharing a bath at one point of the movie. But filming the intimate scenes wasn’t quite as easy as viewers may have thought.
Years later, the actress has admitted how she struggled to film the racy scenes and often broke out in “hives” when she had to kiss her co-star on camera. Speaking to ABC News at the time, Julia confessed: “I had never done this kind of stuff before and I was really nervous.
“I’d get hives. They’d say, ‘Kiss’ and I’d get a hive… but the funny thing is that we’d become such a family. This particular crew, we became so close to one another that by the time a scene like this came up – everyone knowing the way that I felt and my kind of value ideas about it – everybody was more nervous than I was.”
The actress’ career went on to catapult to new heights with the actress sharing the screen with huge Hollywood actors including George Clooney, Hugh Grant and Jude Law. But in 2009, the actress revealed she had stopped taking part in films where her character would be topless.
When she attended the premier of her film Duplicity at Leicester Square, she was asked if she would consider stripping off for a role on the big screen. She told publications: “You know it’s not really what I do, so if you’re going to ask me to do it, you have to expect it to be toned down. You know, as a mum of three, I feel like that.

She went on: “I wouldn’t do nudity in films. To act with my clothes on is a performance. To act with my clothes off is a documentary.” The actress shares three children with her husband Danny Moder: twins Phinnaeus and Hazel, 20., and their youngest son Henry, 16.
After more than 20 years together, the showbiz couple have cemented themselves as one of Hollywood’s most inspiring couples. The pair met on the set of the 2001 film The Mexican and later tied the knot in a super private ceremony held on Independence Day a year later.
