Katy Perry ‘has blood on her hands’ as nun died begging ‘please stop’ in legal battle

Katy Perry was told she had “blood on her hands” by a mourning nun, after another nun died during a legal battle with the singer.

It’s perhaps one of the most bizarre stories from the showbiz world ever and more suited to a Netflix drama. But some of a dying nun’s last words were reportedly: “Katy Perry, please stop.”

It all happened in 2018, when nuns Rita Callanan and Catherine Rose Holzman were gearing up to take on Katy in court. The religious duo were trying to challenge Katy’s attempted purchase of an old LA convent.

It was reported that Fireworks singer Katy had agreed to buy it for $14.5million (£12m). The former convent was a Roman villa sitting on eight-acres of land and it caught the hitmaker’s attention in 2015.

However the deal fell through because the former residents, the nuns, objected to it. Even though Katy had agreed the sale of the Los Feliz building with the local Catholic archdiocese, the nuns said it belonged to them as they were the former inhabitants.

Attempting to take control, the nuns made their own deal to sell with a rich restauranteur for $15.5m (£12.7m). It was reported they also objected to Katy turning the convent into a private dwelling, claiming it should be open to the public.

In 2015, sister Callanan said: “Well, I found Katy Perry and I found her videos and… if it’s all right to say, I wasn’t happy with any of it.” Legal documents that were obtained by the New York Times showed the nun duo also claimed the sale would make them “violate our canonical vows” to the Catholic Church.

Weirdly, it also revealed Katy had visited the convent and performed Oh Happy Day for the nuns. She’d also apparently showed them her tattoo of Jesus to try and impress them.

Fast-forward to July 2016, and a court ruled that the nuns’ sale was legally invalid – a win for Katy. But the nuns weren’t backing down.

Things took a turn in March 2018 as the legal battle headed to court. Sister Holzman collapsed in court and died.

Hours earlier, she had said while speaking to Fox11 LA: “Katy Perry, please stop. It’s not doing anyone any good except hurting a lot of people.” An archdiocese representative said they were “sad to hear the news of her passing”.

And as always happens with internet culture, Katy’s fans made light of the news. They shared memes from her song Swish Swish, which features the lyrics “another one in the casket”.

A year later in June 2019, surviving nun Sister Callanan told the New York Post: “I really didn’t like Katy Perry. I’m sure she doesn’t like me.” She added that Katy had “blood on her hands”.

Sadly, it seems it was all for nothing. By October of the same year, there were reports that Katy’s attempt to buy the convent had expired.
