New reality show Banged Up will feature one of the most shocking things ever to air on TV – a celebrity going to the toilet to retrieve a condom filled with tobacco.
A raft of famous faces were sent to prison to live with some ex-inmates for the series and see how they would cope with life behind bars. Friday Night Dinner actor Tom Rosenthal broke the rules by smuggling in tobacco in his colon.
When he got to his cell and was out of sight of prison guards, he went to the toilet to get hold of it. The grim footage, which will air in the opening episode of the series, is likely to divide opinion among viewers. Tom said: “I’ve always wanted to take a poo on television.

“Sorry it’s disgusting. That’s prison!” The stunt is common practice in Britain’s jails. Tom did it in a bid to avoid trouble with any of the ex-inmates.
He said: “I did my research and I was told that it was good to have tobacco in prison because it’s a form of currency.“Apparently what I put up my butt could be £200 in the canteen.
“I thought I would go in there and be bullied and intimidated. And what you can do is offer people stuff. I wanted to go to prison and have something to offer as soon as I crossed through the gates because I knew I couldn’t intimidate these people.”
It’s been reported that filming for a second series of the show is underway before the first has even aired. The upcoming season was shot at the disused Shrewsbury Prison with actual former prison involved – and ex-cons have signed up too to make it realistic.

A TV source told The Sun: “Channel 4 are pretty sure that Banged Up will hook viewers when it airs, so they’ve been considering this sequel for some time. And doing a women’s version in a women’s prison and an all female line up of prison staff was a no-brainer. Though, of course, they’ll be watching closely to see what the reaction is to the first series.”
The series starts next Tuesday (October 31) at 9.15pm on Channel 4.
