TV star worth ‘$30million’ spotted working in supermarket – and fans aren’t impressed

A high-profile celebrity worth an estimated $30million has sent the internet into a spin after being spotted ‘working’ in a supermarket – and people think she’s mocking the working class.

Charli D’Amelio, 19, from Norwalk, Connecticut, boasts the coveted title of most popular woman on TikTok, with a staggering 156 million followers on the platform. The Gen Z dancing queen shot to fame in her mid-teens, and by 2019, she became TikTok’s top creator.

The influencer even got so big that, along with her family, she had her own TV show on Hulu: The D’Amelio Show. Now, instead of lighting up the internet with her impressive dance moves, the self-styled ‘Face of TikTok’ caused quite the stir after appearing in US supermarket chain, Walmart, donning its uniform and scanning items at the checkout.

And the social media star, who earns a minimum of £82,000 per TikTok post, wasn’t working the tills out of the goodness of her heart. Charli, who has an estimated net worth of $30million, or £24.6m, according to Celebrity Net Worth, was chasing even more dollars, prancing around the supermarket to promote her new popcorn range: Be Happy Snacks Popcorn.

The internet wasn’t impressed after watching the video, which garnered 80millions views. They claimed the teen was making a mockery of blue-collar workers. “Role playing as a hardworking Walmart cashier is kind of low,” one furious Twitter/X user said.

“Rich people pretending to be poor, how beautiful,” another quipped. “I wish I had enough money to cosplay as a retail worker, so fun being in the working class,” a third wrote.

Despite the backlash, Charli isn’t the first celeb to be seen working an ordinary job to promote a product. In 2011, British football icon David Beckham went undercover in Target as an undercover employee to push his signature fragrance.

The so-called prank was set up by Ellen DeGeneres who instructed the star to sing, shout and spray customers with eau de Beckham.
