BRITs’ Global Icon Kylie Minogue’s love life – famous musicians and iconic soap stars

Kylie Minogue found fame as an actress in 1986 after landing the role of Charlene Mitchell in Aussie soap, Neighbours.

The highlight of her two-year stint on the show saw her character marry Scott Robinson – played by Jason Donovan – who Kylie would go on to date off-screen for almost three years. Her music career took off in 1988, meanwhile, with the release of monster hits Locomotion and I Should Be So Lucky, before a duet with Jason – Especially For You – sold over a million copies in the UK alone.

Now, with seven UK number-one albums and seven UK number-one singles to her name, the pint-sized 55-year-old has been recognised for her musical achievements as she collects the coveted BRIT Awards Global Icon Award on Saturday (March 2) for 2024.

Jason Donovan

Kylie and Jason’s love story captured the imagination both in the UK and Down Under, with Especially For You melting the hearts of their fans. As their stock rose, however, so did their work opportunities, prompting them to spend more and more time apart.

As the pair travelled the globe separately, Kylie found herself falling for INXS frontman, Michael Hutchence – something that would haunt Jason for years. He recalled to the Mirror in 2016 a phone call from Kylie – who was in Japan at the time – informing him of her decision to break up.

“It was an extremely painful parting of ways, and without a doubt I took a long time to recover from it. Years definitely,” he admitted. It was bad enough she’d run off with anybody, but she happened to run into the arms of the greatest rock god of the period – the very guy I secretly wanted to be. That was a pretty big punch to take.”

Michael Hutchence

Hutchence found stardom with his rock band INXS’ fourth album, Sting, released in 1984. As well as his relationship with Kylie, he was also known for his two-year romance with Paula Yates, with whom he shared a daughter Tiger Lily. Both Hutchence and Yates both died in tragic circumstances – Hutchence from suicide via hanging in 1997 aged 37, and Yates three years later from a heroin overdose, aged 41.

Kylie and Hutchence first met in a bar in 1989 and dated for 18 months – until he left her for Danish supermodel Helena Christensen. At the time their relationship was deemed a surprising one, given Kylie’s squeaky-clean image and Hutchence’s rock star ways.

Indeed, Kylie has admitted a lot of her “firsts” came during their romance in the “wild phase” of her life. The pair were rumoured to have joined the Mile-High Club as they sat behind then-Aussie Prime Minister Bob Hawke and were later stopped in security after handcuffs were found in Hutchence’s suitcase.

Lenny Kravitz

Whilst Kylie never went ‘official’ with American rocker Lenny Kravitz, the duo are believed to have enjoyed a short-lived fling in the early 1990s. The pair later collaborated on the 2020 cover of Oasis’ Stop Crying Your Heart Out, but details of their romance remain a mystery to this day.

Kravitz revealed in 2020 that he will talk about his life when he releases an autobiography in the future. Asked by the Herald Sun about Kylie, he teased: “Ha! I’ve always been very open and honest, so anything that happened in my life will be in there. But it’ll be a while before the next book.”

James Gooding

Kylie and James Gooding hooked up at the dawn of the new millennium and remained an item for three years – until he cheated on her with fellow model, Sophie Dahl. He later described Kylie as a “self-obsessed, virtually friendless control freak” in a damning interview.

The star responded, blaming Gooding’s drug use as the biggest problem in their doomed relationship. She told People shortly after the split: “I was madly in love with James from the beginning but it all went so badly wrong. He couldn’t live without sniffing a line of cocaine or drinking heavily. I should have ditched him before the entire thing got messy.”

Joshua Sasse

Fans thought Kylie had found ‘the one’ when she hooked up with British actor Joshua Sasse in 2015. Their relationship quickly went from strength to strength, with the pair getting engaged in February 2016. Things turned sour just a year later, however, following allegations No Tomorrow star Joshua had cheated.

Kylie took to Instagram in February 2017 to announce the breakup as she thanked her fans for standing by her. “Thank you for all your love and support throughout this recent chapter of my life,” she wrote. “Thank you now for your love and understanding with the news that Josh and I have decided to go our separate ways. We wish only the best for each other as we venture towards new horizons.”

“It wasn’t meant to be and so I look forward to moving on, richer for the experience,” she said. The songstress admitted that after a string of unsuccessful relationships, settling down may never be in her future. “I haven’t had the white picket fence and happy ever after in my life, so far, but perhaps that’s just not my destiny,” she went on. “I know love and I love to be in love,” she added to The Sunday Herald Sun.

Paul Solomons

After weeks of rumours, Kylie confirmed she was dating GQ Creative Director Paul Solomons in a sweet Instagram post in July 2018. Two months later the couple made their red carpet debut at the GQ Men of The Year Awards where Kylie told the celeb-packed crowd she had “I’ve found my man of the year… and some”.

Appearing on Lorraine in 2021, meanwhile, Kylie gushed: “He is so nice. He is probably not watching, I am sure he is at work. He is such a good support. We have a laugh. We have both been through enough in our lives and just met at the right time, so it’s lovely.”

Despite being forced to spend nine months apart at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, their romance blossomed, culminating in Paul’s step-mum revealing they had got engaged – something Kylie denied later in 2021, insisting they were “happy as they are”.

By February 2023, however, they certainly weren’t happy anymore and went their separate ways. A source told The Sun at the time: “Long distance isn’t easy for any couple. Kylie and Paul really tried to make things work but ultimately the time difference was a killer – Paul couldn’t exactly nip to Melbourne for a long weekend whenever things got strained.

“Kylie initially wanted to keep the split quiet though as she really does not want the narrative to be ‘poor, unlucky-in-love-Kylie’s heartbreak again. She and Paul remain friends.”
