Coronation Street villain ‘hated’ by soap fans has unexpected second career

Coronation Street’s Connor McIntyre has become an artist.

The 63-year-old actor made his debut as the twisted builder Pat Phelan back in October 2012 and his reign of terror lasted almost five years until he was bumped off on June 1, 2018 after he was stabbed to death by Anna Windass (Debbie Rush)

During his stint in Weatherfield, Phelan was responsible for the deaths of four residents. It was in 2016 that he first got his appetite for killing when he stood over Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis) and watched him die as he suffered a heart attack.

After making life a living hell for Anna, Phelan turned his attention to poor Michael who tried to uncover Phelan’s dodgy flats scam but Phelan caught him in his office, the pair had a scrap and Michael suffered a heart attack. Seizing the opportunity to see him off once and for all, Phelan stood over him and taunted him as he died.

Viewers were reeling in shock months later when Pat appeared to brutally kill Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth) by smashing a laptop down on his head, before making it appear that he had left the street.

However, a big twist followed when it was revealed that he had been keeping Andy hostage in a derelict building for seven months. Phelan refused to let Andy go until he had murdered his old friend Vinny Ashford (Ian Kelsey). After killing Andy with a single bullet, Phelan dumped Andy and Vinny’s bodies in a lake.

In January 2018, Luke Britton (Dean Fagan) was killed off in a dramatic car fireball after he came close to finally exposing the baddie businessman dastardly deeds. Psychopath Phelan shot the popular character before leaving him to die in a fireball in his own car., making him of the most “hated” soap villains in Corrie history.

During his time on the cobbles, actor Connor earned his MA in contemporary art practice at the University of Plymouth in 2015 and went on to launch The Alamo Project, an independent artist-led studio space.

He regularly shares his artwork online and has teamed up with the Marie Curie Great Summer Art Auction to auction off his paintings in the name of charity.

The soap star left school with no qualifications and previously said: “I don’t suppose I was academic, I wasn’t that bright. So in short, I seldom went to school. I’d hang out, smoking, doing what they do now when they don’t go to school, normal Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn stuff…okay it might not have been that, but it feels like it when you’re that age.”

Since leaving Corrie, Connor has appeared in Ackley Bridge in a guest role as Grandad Cooper and also starred in 2023 feature film Our Kid as John Reilly.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
