GMB’s Susanna Reid was ‘wobbling’ after attempting to copy Rishi Sunak’s odd diet

Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid has opened up on a tough 36-hour attempt to go without food.

Reid returned to our screens to present the ITV show with Richard Madeley on Monday morning (January 29). Susanna was chatting with guests and host Richard about the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, after he made a striking revelation.

During the discussion, it was revealed that the Prime Minister regularly goes 36 hours without eating anything. He reportedly does this every Sunday from 5pm and throughout Monday so he is prepped and primed for the week ahead on Tuesday.

Madeley was going into detail on the Prime Minister’s bizarre plan when Susanna revealed she could not believe that was possible. A curious Reid, however, wanted to see how likely she could last had she been able to do the same thing.

Susanna admitted she tried to undertake the Prime Ministers’ strict fasting regime, but added that she struggled. Opening up on her experience she said that she was inspired after eating unhealthy foods.

“I had, I would say, a big day on Saturday of eating junk,” she said. “Then I read this story and I thought, ‘Ok, well if the Prime Minister can do 36 hours, I should be able to do something similar.’”

Reid said that she stopped eating after tucking into her dinner on Saturday night (January 27). But it was not long before the pangs of hunger were already starting to get to the broadcaster.

“At 11.30am on Sunday morning, 14 hours in, I was the definition of hangry!” she exclaimed. “My blood sugar, I could feel myself sort of wobbling – there was no way I could do more than 14 hours without eating.”

One of the guests on the show, Kevin Maguire, revealed to Richard and Susanna that he himself went 36 hours without eating. When questioned by Richard why he did so, he admitted that he was curious about whether it would lift him from a sluggish state.

“I felt lousy and I thought I’d see if it’s a shock to break it,” he explained. “I didn’t find it too bad actually.”

Madeley, 67, clearly inspired by his co-star’s bravery, vowed to undertake the same challenge to see how long he could go without food. Declaring a start to the challenge, he insisted he would begin at 5pm on Monday and last the whole of Tuesday without sustenance.

However, things immediately hit a wall for Richard, as later in the programme he read out a text from a friend chastising him for his decision. It was also made worse as the pair were meant to go for dinner on Monday evening.

Instead, Richard admitted he would have to push back his attempt at the fasting until much later in the week. However, he insisted that he would still take on the challenge to see if it is indeed feasible, whilst Susanna added that “fasting isn’t for everybody”.

Good Morning Britain airs every weekday at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
