Paul O’Grady’s fans were welling up when they saw the late TV star return to their screens.
The beloved entertainer sadly died “unexpectedly but peacefully” in March 2023 aged 67 from sudden cardiac arrhythmia. But before he passed, the TV presenter filmed Paul O’Grady’s Great Elephant Adventure, a two-part nature series for ITV.
The show aired it’s first episode on Sunday night (March 31) – a year after his passing – and his fans were sobbing at their TV sets. They flocked to X, formerly Twitter, to share their love for the star.

One wrote: “#Elephantadventure making me happy and sad, smile and cry all in one go.” Another said: “‘Elephants and Paul O’Grady in one place on my telly is not good for my emotional stability”.

A third commented: “Paul O’Grady really is a national treasure. We lost so much a year ago.” A fourth added: “So lovely to be watching Paul O’Grady again.
“He really was such a genuine guy who got on with any animal he came across. Very emotional watching him with the elephants tonight He really was one of a kind”.

Animal lover Paul shot his final TV project across Thailand and Laos in December 2022. Voiceover work was finished in the weeks prior to his death, which happened at home with his partner Andre Portasio.
The two-part series sees Paul help out at centres caring for elephants, an endangered species. The show’s producer and Paul’s pal Claire Barton said: ‘Paul wanted to highlight the plight of elephants, which fascinated him throughout his life.

She added: “Little did we know that this would be the last TV series Paul would film before his death last year.” Paul lived in a farmhouse in Kent with his husband Portasio along with lots of animals, including five dogs, goats, sheep, chickens and barn owls.
