One actress who starred in a film with unsimulated sex scenes confessed filming was “boring” and “very unerotic”.
Nymphomaniac star Stacy Martin explained just how the scenes were filmed using body doubles who actually had sex on set. She starred as the young version of Joe in the film, alongside Willem Dafoe, Shia LaBeouf and Uma Thurman.
Directed by Lars von Trier, the 2013 release follows a self-diagnosed sex addict who recounts her erotic past experiences to the man who saved her from a beating. Its sequel, meanwhile, delves into an even darker backstory featuring the same cast.

As you might expect, the film features some pretty explicit romping scenes. And rather than faking it all, the filmmakers decided to go with real sex – using body doubles. Stacy explained to MTV in 2014: “Basically, we would do the scenes. What happens is that we have to agree on a position because of the CGI.
“Everything has to be set, so we would do the scene with Shia or whoever it was, and we would get little black dots on our bodies. It was very unerotic, very technical and it gets quite boring because then they have to do exactly the same with the porn doubles.”
She explained: “But they’re having real sex, and they put the two together.” Stacy had some pretty steamy make-out sessions with her co-star Shia, but she was thankful she didn’t have to act out more than that on-screen.
Their contracts featured a nudity clause, too, with Stacy telling Vice: “We had a nudity contract. Everything was set in stone before we did the film, so we all knew what we were doing. I was told that I would have a porn double – that I wouldn’t be doing anything sexual. We all agreed – and Lars agreed – that we would be using prosthetics and just stuff like that.”
She added that the oral sex scene used prosthetic genitals, adding: “I’m convinced that it looks real – but no, it’s not real. It’s not a real penis… They made fake vaginas and fake penises and we used them for that.”

She and LaBeouf talked “a lot” about the raunchy scenes before getting into filming – but Shia “was not messing around” when they got down to business. She explained: “It wasn’t the most natural moment of my life, that’s for sure. But, as actors, if you’re gonna take on a role like Joe or Jerôme [LaBeouf], it’s your duty in your work to honour those circumstances.”
Nymphomaniac isn’t von Trier’s only film featuring real sex – his 1998 release The Idiots also featured real romping. The black comedy film features a real orgy, following a group of friends who pretend to suffer from mental disabilities and destroy their normal lives in the process.
