Ruth Langsford annoyed as famous singer 'can't understand her' on This Morning

This Morning host Ruth Langsford was left red-faced on today’s show when singer Don McLean appeared on the show – and struggled to understand her.

While the American Pie singer chatted comfortably with her co-presenter Eamonn Holmes, Don couldn’t hear Ruth properly when she asked him questions.

She said: “We hope that someday you’ll be able to come to the UK and tour and all those fans will be on their feet for you again.

“You’ve very kindly agreed to sing live for our audience this morning. I’m going to give your introduction, are you ready Don?”

After a moment of silence, he replied: “When are you going to be touring, is that what you’re asking?”

Ruth corrected him, saying: “No, no. Are you ready to sing?”

Still confused, Don asked: “Am I having a good time?”

Ruth burst into laughter as she asked for the third time, forced to shout to be understood by the US star, as she said: “Are you ready to sing? Ok, he’s got the guitar.”

Finally understanding the UK host, Don answered: “I’m starting to sound like Walter Brennan! You want to hear a little Vincent, is that what you want?”

Don eventually burst into tune, giving viewers a delightful rendition of his 1972 hit single “Vincent,” inspired by painter Vincent Van Gogh.

Once the interview wrapped, Ruth wondered: “Why couldn’t he understand me?”

Defending herself, Ruth added: “I think my diction is quite good.”

Later, left feeling triumphant, Eamonn exclaimed: “She always criticises me for the way I speak and it was me he understood, not you!”

Insisting her dictation was easy to understand, Ruth argued that Eamonn’s accent might be easier for Don to comprehend because of his Irish twang.

Trying his best to get the upper hand, Eamonn joked that Ruth ought to learn to speak “properly” in order for others to understand her more clearly.

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
